We’re not exactly built to put blind faith in our politicians. For this, I will take my share of the blame as a member of the fourth estate and, specifically, as political columnists whose job it is to critique public policy. One gets that.

When the Seniors’ Centre closed its doors for coffee in Planet Veregin, we knew stuff must be getting real. And the same for gathering places all over our region. Social distancing just can’t work.

I was at home and browsing the news online last Friday evening, which isn’t a shock considering the job title on my business card, as well as the current state of the world that we find ourselves in at the moment.

It was in December Yorkton Council discussed that The City of Yorkton’s Public Works Department was in the middle of a crisis. Their building was no longer habitable, and the 75 people on staff have to be relocated for safety reasons.

Another week passes and we haven’t shaken the worldwide pandemic known as COVID-19, which continues to assert its firm grasp on economies across the globe. We are officially in the thick of it.

I got involved with senior athletics back in 2007. At that time the only location in Saskatchewan where rural senior slo-pitch tournaments were taking place was in the Parkland Valley District.

So we are all in self-isolation mode as much as is reasonable. That might sound like it’s a jail term, but being at home with time on your hands can be a time to relax, once you get past the concerns of COVID-19 and making sure rent is paid.
