RAMA - The little village of Rama received a boost to its recreation capabilities when community members helped to erect new playground equipment, much to the excitement of its many neighbourhood children.

Rama is an older village with a population of approximately 80 residents. “It may be small in size but big on heart,” stated Keyla Kish, one of Rama Recreation board members.

In 2016, the Rama Recreation board was re-established with a common goal of establishing a new park. The board is very grateful that they reached its goal this past summer. The goal was reached through a federal grant that the Village office previously received. The grant and a donation of $20,000 from the Rama centennial celebration in 2019, meant all funding was in place and the building planning stage began for the park.

“First, the date was picked, then the real work of landscaping and building the structures for the park began with many volunteers participating,” said Kish. The original treated wood structures that had served the community for years were put up for tender removal and once they were removed the groundwork began.

“Two gallons, a can of spray paint, an excavator, a dump truck and lots of heart, and we continued the process,” shared Kish.

On July 23, with the help of several community members, new playground equipment was installed. “The words, ‘heart and soul’ acknowledging the hard word and dedication of the many volunteers were etched into the frame of the structure. By late afternoon we were wrapping up the installation and many excited children lined up to try out the new equipment,” she said.

The newly re-developed park features several attractions for all ages to enjoy. “The park has turned out beautifully. It is nestled in the south east side of the village, surrounded by nature and trees,” described Kish.

The Rama Park features a pickleball court, a gazebo with benches, a multi-level wheelchair accessible play structure complete with swings and two merry-go-rounds. There are tables located on either side of the structure with a ramp and accessible equipment.

“There are many hands that made this project possible. The future generations of the village are indebted to the kindness and generosity that paved the way to a safer and more accessible way to play,” concluded Kish.

The committee plans on continuing to make improvements to the park in the near future.
