Apartment fire in Saskatoon causes $100K damage, displaces residents

SASKATOON - An apartment fire Friday night in the 400 block of Central Ave. in Saskatoon caused about $100,000 in damage.

At 11:21 p.m. on March 31, 2023, the Saskatoon Fire Department received a report of smoke on the 2nd floor of a three story multi residential building.  Three fire engines, one rescue unit, one ladder truck and the Battalion Chief were dispatched. 

First arriving fire crews were on scene at 11:24 p.m. A fire was located in a suite on the second floor and was fully engulfed in fire. All incoming fire crews were assigned their tactical duties  A portion of Central Avenue was closed for safety at the scene, creating a safe work space for firefighters and equipment to be set up.  

Occupants had safely evacuated on fire crews' arrival. The fire alarm system had been activated, alerting everyone to evacuate. 

An exterior and interior attack on the fire was conducted by fire crews. A city bus was requested for occupants to be placed. A fire Investigator was requested to attend. Saskatoon city police assisted with traffic control and placing occupants onto the bus. 

Firefighters brought the fire under control at 11:49 p.m.  At 12:59 a.m. on April 1, the fire scene was turned over to the Fire Investigator.  

Cause of the fire has been determined to be a lit candle that overturned, igniting combustible materials in the area.  Fire originated in the living room. Damage is estimated at $100,000.  The building is closed at this time due to smoke and water damage. The property owner and manager rehoused the occupants.  Building will be re-opened once the remediation has been conducted.

No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred as a result of this fire.
