LA RONGE – Sampson Myles Roberts, 23, pleaded guilty to driving straight towards two police officers in a marked vehicle at a high rate of speed and swerving at the last minute.

Crown Prosecutor Daniel Arnot and defence counsel Christopher Koben entered a joint sentencing submission to La Ronge Provincial Court on April 10, which Judge Murray Pelletier accepted.

Several charges were withdrawn, including robbery, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, resisting a police officer, and two counts of assaulting a police officer with a weapon.

Roberts was given 425 days for dangerous driving, driving while being pursued by a police officer, and driving while prohibited.

Those charges stem from an incident on May 16, 2023, after La Ronge RCMP got a report of a robbery on Mikisew Drive. Police say several people approached a woman driving a vehicle, forced her out of it and stole it. She wasn’t physically injured.

La Ronge RCMP found the vehicle on Far Reserve Road and attempted a traffic stop but Roberts fled from police at a high rate of speed through local streets where there were pedestrians.

At one point, Roberts drove straight towards two police officers in a marked police vehicle at a high rate of speed before swerving at the last minute. There were no injuries or damage to the vehicles.

Police found the vehicle in a yard at a home and the occupants fled on foot but were arrested shortly after without incident. Police found a small bag of suspected cocaine and trafficking paraphernalia during the arrest.

Tynielle Tyia Sanderson, also known as Tynielle Simon, was charged. She is in custody and is back in La Ronge Provincial Court on April 18. Alice Milne was charged as well. She was given a conditional discharge in August 2023.

Roberts also pleaded guilty to several charges in another incident and was sentenced to 180 days consecutive on an assault charge, 180 days concurrent each for obstructing a police officer, possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, and driving while prohibited.

The court imposed a three-year driving prohibition and ordered him to provide his DNA to the National DNA Data Bank.

Roberts was given 533 days credit for time served on remand.

Previous sentence

In October 2021, Roberts was sentenced to one year in jail for weapons offences in two separate incidents.

In one incident, La Ronge RCMP charged him with six firearm-related offences after they got a complaint of shots fired at a home on Bells Point Road on Lac La Ronge Indian Band.
