Man convicted of murder accused of assaulting guard at Sask. Pen

In October 2020, Brandon Cole Brick was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years on a second-degree murder charge in the death of James Chaisson in February 2018.

PRINCE ALBERT – A man convicted of murder now faces a charge of assault against a guard at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert.

In October 2020, Brandon Cole Brick*, now 32, was sentenced to life in prison with no parole eligibility for 12 years on a second-degree murder charge in the death of James Chaisson in February 2018.

Brick, who has since been moved to Kent Institution, a maximum-security prison in Agassiz, British Columbia, is refusing to appear in Prince Albert Provincial Court to face the new charge, according to court documents. Judge Hugh Harradence adjourned the matter to Sept. 13.

Brick shot and killed Chaisson on Feb. 14, 2018, in the 100 block of Avenue P South in Saskatoon. Brick and Chaisson were members of rival street gangs in Saskatoon, according to CBC.

Chaisson was originally from North Battleford and spent part of his childhood in Speers, Saskatoon, and Whitecap Dakota First Nation, according to his obituary.

*Note: In 2018, police and media spelled Brandon Cole Brick's name as Brandin Cole Brick. Court documents, however, spell his name as Brandon Cole Brick.
