Melfort RCMP investigate assault on James Smith Cree Nation

JAMES SMITH CREE NATION – Melfort RCMP are investigating an assault on James Smith Cree Nation after a woman received serious but non-life-threatening injuries. She didn’t require immediate medical attention.

On Aug. 8, at approximately 10:55 p.m., Melfort RCMP got a report of an assault and uttering threats on James Smith Cree Nation.  

Melfort RCMP responded and conducted proactive patrols throughout James Smith Cree Nation and surrounding communities, and followed-up on information provided to them. Additional Saskatchewan RCMP resources including officers from the Tisdale and Prince Albert detachments were called to assist with search efforts for a male suspect.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on Aug. 9, Prince Albert RCMP located the male suspect inside a vehicle approximately one km west of Muskoday on Highway 3 toward Prince Albert. He was arrested and taken to hospital in Melfort for medical treatment, for injuries unrelated to his arrest. He was placed in police cells afterward and held until his first court appearance In Nipawin court Thursday.

The 35-year-old man has been charged with assault and failing to comply with an appearance notice.
