Thief steals car with children inside

Kids were able to escape before the suspect drove away, police say.

REGINA – In a parent's nightmare come true, a thief nabbed a running vehicle with children inside.

At around 10 a.m. this morning, RPS responded to a call on the 2300 block of East Victoria Avenue for a stolen vehicle.

"The victim had left her van running with her 14-year-old and three-year-old children inside when the suspect got into the driver’s seat," said RPS in a media release. "The children were able to exit the vehicle before the suspect drove away."

Police noticed a vehicle matching the description of the one reported stolen headed west on Victoria Avenue by Francis Street while responding to the call.

"The vehicle entered the east alley of Toronto Street, and the male fled on foot," RPS said. "After a short foot chase, the male was taken into custody with no further incident."

Frederick Charles Severight, 34, was charged with theft of a motor vehicle and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

He made a first appearance on these charges in Regina Provincial Court on May 5.
