Everybody Has a Story

Melissa Squire is not your average designer, nor is she your average bride.

He’s a cast member of one of Canada’s most prestigious theatre companies and, although his immediate family no longer resides here, he still comes “home” to the Battlefords.

"It's hard to live in a community when people are so divided," says Virginia Favel of Sweetgrass First Nation. One might think the division Favel talks about is the one between First Nation people and non-First Nation people. But it's not.

When the iconic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played for 1,200 people at Paradise Hill's Summer Bash, a young musician from North Battleford was the opening act. It was a dream come true for Bruin Eberle.

Growing up, she fell asleep to the mad pounding of the Atlantic Ocean on the shores of the famous Irish County of Sligo. As an adult, she found her children's playground frequented by polar bears.

This week, the Summer School for the Solo Voice is underway in North Battleford. It's a unique summer school that provides not only education but performance opportunities for participants as well as recitals open to the public.

"She has hardly wavered. There've been times when it was very tough," says Rose Ray, mother of actress and dancer Natalie Krill. "She's very determined, she always was.

How many people can you get to know in 83 years? Ask Elsie Boulton, the Glaslyn girl from Prongua. She learned how to initiate a conversation from her father, the late Bill Lofts of Glaslyn. "I just have always talked to people," says Boulton.

A year ago, when CBC named her one of Saskatchewan's 40 under-40s to watch, Kjelti Anderson said, ""I have this compulsion to make an impact; I feel the need to change things and make waves.

Questions running the gamut from "Do you count your steps?" to 'Is your dog blind?" have been posed to Michael Huckabay by people curious about how he gets around.
