The entire student body gathered in the school gym on Thursday, Feb. 2nd for a very special occasion. QVDA women's representative Kara Taylor welcomed everyone for the presentation of the Sask Milk Sportsmanship banner for 3A Girls Volleyball to the Kipling Magyars Sr. Girls volleyball team and their coaches Kim Zepick and Melissa Gesell.
Also present were Terry Berglund, PVSD Board member Subdivision 6, Lyle McKellar from SHSAA and Emanuel Baumann representing Sask Milk.
Sportsmanship is about more than just winning and losing, it is about playing fair and giving it your all.
“When I am coaching, I aim to help athletes improve their skills but, more importantly, to help students become better people. The way that an athlete treats their team, their opponents, and the outcome of the game demonstrates the true character a person and it is this that we strive to instill in our athletes in high school athletics. I cannot say enough how proud I am of these girls that they have been chosen to receive an award for their sportsmanship, for their character,” comments Taylor.
“It's a pleasure for us to get out of our office and out to the schools. Congratulations to the school for achieving this Sportsmanship Award which recognizes the efforts of the senior girls volleyball team,” explains Lyle McKellar from SHSAA.
“Kipling has a respectful and responsible team of girls that hosted provincials,” states McKellar and adds “the team was led by excellent role models.”
Kipling School has won three other banners over the years...Sportsmanship Award for both Volleyball and Soccer in 1999 and the Sportsmanship Award for Volleyball in 2010. This represents the ideals of school sports. And now Kipling will leave a legacy with another blue banner hanging proudly in the gym.
Sask Milk provides free milk at all provincials and provided milk to all students as they left the gym following the presentation.
