BATTLEFORD — Battleford's Community Players are hosting auditions for their upcoming shows, and anyone is welcome to attend.

The first show is Strawberries in January by Evelyn de la Cheneliere, a light drama that requires two men and two women aged 30-50. The biography on club's website reads,

"Francois and Sophie love each other but break up just before their wedding. Francois' friend, Robert, happens to stay at Leah's B & B, where they have a one-night stand. Lea had a baby and comes to Montreal in search of her childhood friend, Sophie. Meanwhile, Francois has introduced Robert to Sophie without telling him that she is his ex...just as things are getting really complicated, Lea arrives. This is a delicate, double love story like they don't make them anymore,"

The second show is Clever Dick by Charles Marowitz, a farce that requires seven men and two women. The synopsis on the club's website reads,

"An antic, tongue-in-cheek spoof which pokes fun at the English class system, and at the notion that the 'upper class' live lives of erotic decadence, indulging in arcane sexual pleasures that the envious labouring classes can only read- or dream about. In the present instance, there is also a murder to be solved, some rather complicated relationships to be sorted, and justice (of a sort) to be done."

Although coming out to auditions might seem daunting, it gives possible actors or actresses the chance to get to know the directors. The audition then becomes a teaching opportunity, learning as actors what might be required, and the attitude and approach important in the theatre, or the part.

"Different styles of theatre require different types of acting," Challis said.

"I’ve always looked at community theatre as being completely accessible. Most community theatre groups just do inane comedies, because they think they’re easy to do, and the audiences like them because there are no real social issues involved, you don’t have to think about them. You come, laugh, and go home.

"But I’ve always been of the feeling that if there’s a play written, it’s accessible to the community. It can be performed."

The auditions are to be held Dec. 12 and 13, at 7:30 pm, 102-26th Street, Battleford. If you have more questions or need more information, call 306-441-3631, or 306-441-4630.
