BATTLEFORD – Battlefords Community Players is getting ready to launch a new season of shows for people to enjoy in the Battlefords.
Executive producer Donna Challis said it will be a fun line-up of plays, guaranteed to give the audience a chuckle.
"The most exciting thing about it as far as I'm concerned, it's all Canadian plays, and it's all comedies," she said. "We've had a lot of comedies over the years, but this one's definitely all comedies. ... [And] they're all good for the whole family."
Most plays run for eight performances each, with two show-only engagements and six dinner-theatre nights.
As a special offer, if people buy a season's package before Sept. 15, they're entitled to a 20 per cent discount on the tickets.
"It's a good deal," Challis said. "For those that want to come for the whole thing, it's definitely encouraging people to do that."
Five shows are running in the upcoming season. Hedges and Box, two one-act plays, run Oct. 16 to 25.
Hedges is about two neighbours who are ultra compatible "until the mercantile manipulation of a local merchant sets them on a course of destruction."
The other play, Box, is about two men having a funny dispute over a box. See who wins and how.
Then, from Nov. 27 to Dec. 6, a play called Smarty Pants is showing. This is a comedy about middle-aged friendship and how to make friends with your ex.
March 12 to 21 features a musical comedy called Bittergirl, followed by a comedy running May 22 to 30 called Palliser Suite.
Challis is also encouraging people to volunteer and get involved in Battlefords Community Players themselves, whether they want to act or take on other roles.
"There's more than just acting," she said. "There's lots of jobs – stage managing, lighting, sound, costumes, props, just being there to help."
Even small jobs need someone to help.
"If somebody needs a pin done up on their costume or anything like that, there's so much that people can do to help," Challis said. "And the more people we have, the less it ends on the shoulders of a few. And they don't have to be in every show. They can be in one show."
