UPDATE: One fatality in collision near overpass

NORTH BATTLEFORD — Update Jan. 31: One man was killed in the collision that affected traffic in North Battleford Sunday.

Battlefords RCMP are continuing their investigation into a fatal two-vehicle collision that occurred shortly after 1 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 30, just west of the intersection between Battleford Road and Highway 16 on the south side of the city. 

An eastbound semi and a westbound van collided head-on. A male in his sixties, the lone occupant of the minivan, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and lone occupant of the semi was not injured. 

Traffic was re-routed for several hours on Sunday afternoon as members completed the scene examination, but was returned to normal by Sunday evening.  The investigation into this collision is ongoing. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor. 

Update: The highway has been reopened.

Background: Battlefords RCMP is currently on scene investigating a serious motor vehicle collision on Highway 16 at North Battleford near the overpass. Police are asking motorists to avoid the area while the investigation continues and to expect delays for traffic in the area.

RCMP recommend motorists take Territorial Drive to avoid the area.
