NORTH BATTLEFORD — The City of North Battleford is digging itself out of its first significant snowfall of winter Friday morning.

Environment Canada initially predicted 2cm of snowfall on Thursday night into Friday morning; this amount totalled almost 10cm in some areas of the city. The Federal Meteorological Service forecasts snow will end around noon on Friday.

“Our crews are already out working diligently to handle the accumulation of snow as time and resources permit," Joe Gagne, the city's roadways supervisor said.

He noted that sidewalk clearing, cleaning, and sanding is the priority for the city’s roads crew, reminding motorists to keep a safe distance behind snow removal equipment, and not to pass plows, graders, and sanding trucks on roadways.

Chief Lindsay Holm, the city's director of protective services,  stressed that the snowfall is creating unsafe road conditions and motorists should exercise caution.

“This is our first major snowfall of the winter season, and while plows are out, it’s still important to give yourself additional time to commute. At this time, we do not recommend people drive any long distances unless necessary, and to monitor road conditions using the Saskatchewan Highway Hotline," he said.

North Battleford snow removal procedures follow three priority groups for snow clearing and details are available on the City of North Battleford website.
