RCMP cruiser struck by alleged impaired driver who fled scene

LLOYDMINSTER – A Lloydminster RCMP officer was injured in a late-night collision after a suspected impaired driver struck a police cruiser and fled the scene.

The incident happened on July 4 at approximately 11:30 p.m. at the intersection of 50 Ave. and 48 Street. According to police, a vehicle crossed the centre line and collided with a marked patrol car before the driver fled on foot.

Witnesses at the scene provided critical information, allowing officers to quickly locate and arrest the suspect nearby.

Larissa Berland, 36, of Frog Lake, Sask., now faces multiple charges including dangerous driving, impaired driving, and failing to remain at the scene of a collision.

Berland was brought before a justice of the peace and released on conditions. She is to appear before the Lloydminster Provincial Court on July 22.

The RCMP member involved in the collision sustained minor injuries, was assessed in hospital and subsequently released.

“We would like to personally extend our gratitude to the members of the public who stopped to assist our officer immediately following the crash” said Cpl. Byford of the Lloydminster RCMP. “Your quick actions and willingness to remain on scene to provide witness statements greatly assisted our investigation and ensured the safety of everyone involved.”
