NIPAWIN — The Town of Nipawin is set to receive upgrades to its airport runway.

At its July 14 council meeting, Nipawin council approved a runway rehabilitation project.

The decision to repair the runway was necessary, said Jamie Fast, the town’s general manager of operations and engineering services. Council awarded the Nipawin Runway Rehabilitation Project to Covenant Construction Inc. for $199,663.18, excluding GST.

The Town has secured funding through the provincial Community Airport Partnership (CAP) program, which supports critical airport infrastructure improvements.

Fast’s report said the project will address aging infrastructure through key upgrades, including:

  • Crack repairs along the existing runway surface

  • Application of a fog coat on the entire runway and taxiway

  • Expansion of the turnaround area with new asphalt

“These improvements are designed to extend the lifespan of the current pavement, enhance safety for aircraft operations and better position the airport to meet future demand and development,” Fast said.

Through the CAP program, 50 per cent of the project’s cost — up to $160,000 — will be covered by provincial funding. Work is expected to begin in early September and be completed within the month.

Nipawin’s airport is classified as a registered aerodrome and features a 3,500-foot asphalt runway. It serves medevac flights, aerial spraying, and recreational pilots in the region according to Transport Canada – Canadian Flight Supplement
