Two Nipawin Hawks victories over the Melfort Mustangs have set both teams for a highly exciting end to the regular season. They wrap up their seasons on the road March 7, with serious playoff implications on the line.

The Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League unveiled their year-end award winners, with a pair of Nipawin Hawks taking home three awards.

The season may not be over for the Melfort Mustangs, but they celebrated the year so far with their annual awards banquet. This year the team handed out 19 awards at the March 5 event, with 12 different Mustangs taking home awards.

The Melfort Mustangs and Nipawin Hawks rivalry lived up to its name as the two teams combined for 84 penalty minutes and 17 power plays and the Hawks skated away with a 4-0 win.

After just three goals in his first 47 games, Logan Casavant exploded for four goals to lead the Nipawin Hawks to a 6-1 win over the Melfort Mustangs in Nipawin. “He definitely had the Midas touch, that’s for sure, but he worked incredibly hard too.

The Melfort Mustangs picked up a huge 4-2 victory in La Ronge against the Ice Wolves. Despite the win, Trevor Blevins , the team’s head coach, admitted the Feb. 28 game was not his team’s best effort.
