For the fourth year in a row, Liam was the most popular name for baby boys born in Saskatchewan, according to a Government of Saskatchewan press release. Emma was the most popular girl's name for the last five years.

The residents and staff at Caleb Village are keeping warm and busy so far this winter. December was a busy month of entertainment and activities.

Well here we are well into a new year of 2014. The news has been pretty quiet in the local area, but I guess after writing to the local newspaper for 39 years this January I shall be able to scrape up something happening.

The groundhog saw his shadow so we are going to have six more weeks of winter. The good news is there should be lots of snow for the school's Winter Olympics and ski trip.

The Borden Friendship Club held their January potluck supper Jan. 29, with 35 out to enjoy the evening. Celebrating birthdays for December were Jean Hryniuk and, for January, Elizabeth Derksen and Lorraine Olinyk.

I am so excited about this month as it is filled with two of my favourite events - celebrating family birthdays and watching the best of curling on TV. Opening ceremonies for the Olympics will also be on the agenda.

We have a bit of catching up to do this week. Things have been slow around Edam in the news department. The last trip of the month draw for 2013 was won by Brian and Carol Weber of Vawn, with Terry Chambers of Turtleford winning the $100.

It was another cold week, but we survived and look with amazement at weather in other parts of the world. We are happy to be where we are. Four tables of Canasta had a pleasant evening on Jan. 31.

A 70th birthday surprise party was held for Mel Deagnon at Zion Lutheran Church Feb. 1. Have you ever planned a surprise party? If not, let me tell you how to do it and what obstacles you might incur. First of all you have to keep it a secret.

It was -22 C outside, but warm and sunny in the Don Ross Centre art room Tuesday when 10 Battlefords Art Club members were busily working.
