This will be the final news report of this school year. MCS staff hope you enjoyed reading them and hearing about some of the happenings at Maymont Central School.
Summer has arrived and the students are cleaning out their desks. The hallways will be quiet for two months. Everyone wishes the graduating class of 2014 all the best in their future endeavours. Some will be furthering their education, some will be joining the workforce and others will be taking a break to decide what they want to do. Whatever their plans, they will be missed and everyone at MCS wishes them well.
An athletic awards night and barbecue was held at the school June 17. Attendees were treated to hamburgers, hot dogs and potato salad. Ryan Nickell was the MC. Awards and certificates were presented.
In junior girls' volleyball, Meghan Brehon was named Most Improved Player. The Most Valuable Player award went to Kayla Gray for her great play and leadership. The senior girls' team awarded Carlee Hamilton as Rookie of the Year, Ice Maxwell as Most Improved Player and Autumn Amson as Most Valuable Player.
Senior boys' and girls' soccer awards were presented. Offensive MVPs were Tori Hamp and Brady Ferris. Defensive MVPs were Frankie Menzies and Richie Acaster. Most Improved Player awards were given to Alex Batten and Heather Whitehead. Rookies of the Year were Keeley Bzdel, Connor Garrett and Sean Brehon. Leadership awards were presented to Kcarli Maxwell and Jordan Manson.
Senior basketball gave out their certificates to Matthew Favel, the team's Most Valuable Player; Jesse Greenslade, the Leadership Award; Alex Batten, the Most Improved Player; Connor Garrett, the Spirit Award; Riely Rookes, Most Improved Player; and Dylan Bluecloud, Rookie of the Year.
The Senior Male Outstanding Athlete award was given to Carter Amson. His sister, Autumn, was awarded the Outstanding Senior Female Athlete of the Year. Their younger sister, Keara, was presented the Outstanding Junior Female Award. The Amson family likes their sports. Tyson Wawryk was awarded the Outstanding Junior Male Athlete of the Year.
At school, awards were given to the elementary students for their noon hour sports. This award is voted for by the students in house leagues. The Boys' Sportsperson award was given to Jayden Rempel in Grade 5 and the Girls' Sportsperson award was given to Brooke Ferris in Grade 5.
The annual Park Day was wet again this year so it became an at-school Park Day. The elementary students watched a movie, played soccer and other games, had a scavenger hunt and had their faces painted. The older students played games, sports and watched a movie. Hamburgers and cheeseburgers were served for lunch. The day concluded with tug-o-wars in the gym. The Grades 7 and 8 class narrowly beat the staff team.
The spirit days finished with Western Day and the great competition is over. The Grades 4 and 5 class zoomed past all their competition to win the pizza lunch. It was a fun year of playful competition and encouraged everyone to dress up and participate in the spirit days. The Grade 10 class also received a pizza lunch for participation in the high school.
The staff would like to wish Mrs. Heather Cardin all the best in her new teaching assignment at Hafford Central School. Her outstanding English, drama and art skills will be missed around here in the next school year. Heather has been an asset to the school and will be missed.
