Badminton player smashes way to provincials

One of the most important people in anyone's life is due for recognition this weekend. I am talking about our moms. Do your best to recognize her in some way this Mother's Day.

One of the most important people in anyone's life is due for recognition this weekend. I am talking about our moms. Do your best to recognize her in some way this Mother's Day.

UCHS badminton was successful at advancing a girls' singles player to provincial playdowns. Good luck Kelsey Wildeman as she makes the trek to Melfort. The track club is in high gear of practices leading up to their track meet, with provincials only a month away.

The UCHS 50th anniversary celebration is May 17. UCHS staff and alumni will host guests for a variety of activities, as well as viewing the school and reviewing memorabilia.

Congratulations to UCHS alumni Liz Zazalak for earning the MVP award on the Swift Current Great Plains College Sundogs women's basketball team. Also congratulations to Ashlie Klein who was one of the students from Edwards School of Business to be part of the Landis School project.

There is Battlefords Ladies' League action each Monday and Wednesday at the ball diamonds, including Unity Bantam, Midget and Ladies' Softball teams. Peewees, squirts and mites play Tuesday and Thursdays. Baseball has a variety of games going each night of the week. Check out the unityminorball.ca website for more details. The slo-pitch league takes place every Friday night until the end of June.

Minor Ball day was held last weekend to kick off the season for all divisions. Unfortunately the weather put a damper on the weekend as the Greg Morrison baseball camp was cancelled due to soggy diamonds and rainy weather. By Sunday all 14 games slated for Minor Ball Day were cancelled due to the rains. The annual Miners slo-pitch tournament is on deck for the May 25 weekend.

Girl Guides, Brownies and Sparks participated in the annual Tim Hortons community clean up May 5. The girls put on their work gloves and worked proudly to clean areas of town for everyone's benefit. The community appreciates dedicated work of community groups like these young girls in beautifying the town.

Coaches Darren Stifter, Lindsay Brebner, Jeremy Wagner and Denis Allen finished off 12 weeks of the Steve Nash Youth Basketball Program with a windup tournament in North Battleford with girls' and boys' teams.

Volunteer appreciation night was held May 7 with a barbecue supper for volunteers in a vast array of areas. The organizers are most appreciative of their help throughout the year.

This weekend you won't want to miss the Unity School of Dance annual dance recital, "A Year in the Life," at the UCHS senior gym. There will be performances at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Advance tickets are being sold at Our Drug Store and Sister's Flowers.

Saturday Unity Credit Union and Delta Co-op host Roughriders, Chris Getzlaff and Keith Shologan, who will be on hand for a kick off barbecue event to help raise awareness of the International Year of Co-operatives volunteer project and campaign. It's a chance for a photo opportunity and an autograph. Join fellow Rider fans and residents for a meal and take part in the fun.

Swimming lesson registration will start May 22 to 24 at the town council chambers from 1 to 5 p.m. daily. No registrations will be taken by phone prior to this registration. For more information contact Stephanie Schell at 228-2621.

Unity Western Days is coming up the first weekend in June. The committee is always looking for volunteers for a variety of events. As well, they are currently accepting nominations for Citizen of the Year. Nomination forms can be picked up at the Press Herald office.

Unity Legion Branch No. 90 congratulates the winners of their regular season hockey draft - Scott Smith, Myron Wildeman and Tony third. They also made their 50/50 draw at the Co-op store April 24 and the winners were Wendlin Ganzert, $777 , and Lisa Birdsong, $222.

The museum has wrapped up their Sunday brunches but that doesn't mean their activity is over. They are just kicking into high gear. Plans for Canada Day celebrations are underway. The museum office is now open. May 14, the opening day tea will be held in conjunction with the Sask. Tourism flag raising ceremony. The museum is looking forward to another great summer season of visitors and celebrations.

Congratulations to Unity Motocross Club winners Steve Dearborn, Colin Ganter and Cole Pfeiffer who received awards for the top three highest points within the club for the 2011 race year. The club will be hosting a provincial race July 7.

Coffee row, whether it is a topic that should be discussed in May or not, are still talking about hockey. Some of the season's surprising upsets have speculation growing on who will advance and who will eventually be in the finals. Seeding is underway and conversation never strays far from discussing crops to plant, moisture content, latest innovations in farming and the growing season itself.
