July is on its way out soon. Hope you have had this month full of fun, simple summer pleasures and activities around our province.

The Summer Fun program only has a few weeks left so why not enroll your children, ages 5 - 11, each weekday from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 - 4 p.m., July 3 to Aug. 10 at the Unity Community Centre. And every Wednesday is movie night from 7 - 9 p.m. This program offers a variety of activities for kids to help them spend the summer safely with others in a reasonably priced program.

Some bantam-aged softball players will not have a boring summer. In addition to winning a Summer Games berth, which start next week in Meadow Lake, several players were part of the provincial C title won July 15 in Kindersley. And July 22 tryouts were held in Unity for bantam-aged girls and boys to form a Zone 7 girls' team, and Zone 7 boys' team to compete at the annual Fall Ball Zone Provincial Championship to be held in Moosomin September long weekend. Coaches are Brent Weber and Don Robertson.

Both the Peewee and Mosquito A1 Cardinals captured their provincial titles. This makes two out of three Cardinals baseball teams winning titles. The peewee boys did it in two overtime innings. The Mosquito A2 team also went to provincial competition.

Unity did not have a bantam baseball team this year due to lack of players. There was a midget baseball team this year; however, they were not able to advance to a provincial berth out of zone playoffs this year. Pitcher Rhett Feser was picked up by Macklin to play at provincials and Blake Robertson had been chosen earlier in the year to play with the Lloydminster Triple A twins in their quest for their provincial title.

It has been a very exciting year for Unity Minor Ball with two provincial gold for baseball, two provincial gold for softball, two provincial bronze for softball and a gold for the junior B combined Unity/Kindersley softball team. As well the Unity bantam Panthers softball team won a berth to Summer Games and Unity players comprise most of the Zone 7 teams for the Fall Ball Provincial Championships.

Saskatchewan Summer Games begin soon and Unity has athletes competing at it. Congratulations to the Unity Bantam Panthers, competing in softball; Jensen Chorney, competing with the Zone 7 volleyball team; and Blake Robertson, competing with the Zone 7 baseball team. The games are in Meadow Lake starting July 30 and running to Aug. 4. You can log on to their website throughout the games to get updates on team successes and schedules.

This week, the Unity Centennial Swimming Pool was hosting activities to recognize National Drowning Prevention Week. Every day during the week, the pool staff conducted an activity to increase awareness of the need for drowning prevention. Yesterday, they held games on land and in water pertaining to drowning prevention. Today they are hosting a deck dance from 8:30 - 10 p.m. There were 'situations' demonstrated by the lifeguards during public swimming throughout the week.

In this heat wave the swimming pool is one of the best places to cool off. Session two of swimming lessons takes place in the mornings. The pool is open for public swimming each afternoon at evening, as well as offering weekday aqua-sizes class. And watch for the ever popular moonlight swims which take place after public swimming Wednesdays. Also the pool will offer a Bronze Cross Lifesaving course, from Aug. 7 - 10. The pool is offering a diving clinic and scuba diving class but pre-registration is necessary, so please call Stephanie at the pool office 228-2133.

Congratulations to Moody's Equipment who were awarded New Holland Agriculture's highest honour, the President's Club, which recognizes outstanding achievement in all facets of business management and customer satisfaction.

Kids, don't forget to head down to the library for Summer Reading Fun. Posters and booklets were handed out to elementary kids to encourage them to enjoy their local library and keep their reading skills fine-tuned over the summer.

Our community mourns, along with Wilkie, the loss of local RCMP office Derek Pineo who died tragically, responding to another vehicle accident in the early hours of July 20, when the police cruiser he was driving struck a moose.

Coffee row folks always have plenty of topics on the table. With a 3-1 record, Rider fans are very excited at the winning look to this year's Rider squad which creates the Rider excitement we have come to know and love. The coach and quarterback, as well as some of the team's stars, are in the fans' favour again and already hopes are high for finishing in playoff position. Of course the weather topic is never off the table, especially with all of the storm chasers being in our province this past month and keeping tabs of their sightings through social media. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
