Brad Johner and his boys were in Borden Nov. 2 to do a fundraising concert for the Borden Community Centre Preservation Committee. The committee had a ham supper for 80 guests prior to the concert in the Seniors' Room. The concert started at 7:30 p.m. in the main hall.
Brad and the boys - Lucas on piano, Jesse on drums and Quinn playing guitar and keyboard, along with guest bass guitarist Simon Jasieniuk -sang many of Brad's songs including What Little Kids Do, Pirate on the River Saskatchewan, Awesome, You Did it (dedicated to our flood), plus songs of other entertainers. Quinn and Lucas, who also have great voices, sang Some People Want it All and Amazing Just the Way You Are. Simon played Amazing Grace on his bass guitar, and Brad told stories between each song.
At intermission cookies were served with beverages. The door prize of a Brad Johner CD went to Norma Assmus of North Battleford and the 50/50 draw was $164.50. Affinity Credit Union, from their Community Development Fund, donated $3,500 to Action Bowl for their renovations.
Brad and the boys came on for a second set of great music, playing and singing for almost two hours altogether. After the show, Mayor Dave Buckingham thanked Brad and his band for entertaining and then had the BCCPC all come up on stage and have a photo taken with Brad and the boys. Funds raised will go to any needed renovations at the centre.
Borden Friendship Club held their monthly potluck supper Oct. 30, with 35 members and eight guests present. The birthday cakes were brought by Ruby Wall and Rose Mandziak, and blowing out the candles were Peter Thiessen and guest Shirley Jacobsen from the care home.
Terry Petriew introduced the guest entertainers - Jon Sloan and Thelma Boychuk from Wilkie and Doreen Duchnitski from Battleford. Jon and Doreen sang a number of songs including Blue Roses, Folsom Prison, Just Because and Blue Canadian Rockies. Doreen sang Anne Murray songs, then they closed with Gary Felgard's Silver Wings.
At the Lloydminster Fall Fair Oc. 31 - Nov. 2, Glenn (Sheri) and Rachel Sutherland showed five Clythe Mane Shorthorns, with Rachel having the champion female. Their bull calf placed first, and a cow/calf pair was second in the shorthorn show. They placed second in British breed yearling show. Serienko Cattle Co. of Maymont had the champion Charolais female and King of the King Reserve Champion. McIntosh Livestock of Maymont had the champion Simmental bull.
Borden senior boys hosted a volleyball tournament Nov. 2 with five teams entered - Hepburn, Colonsay, Perdue, BVW (Bellevue, Vonda, Wakaw) and Borden. Outplaying the Colonsay team to place first was Hepburn, with BVW third. The parents of the team had a booth all day selling soup, chili, subs, sweets and beverages.
The junior girls' volleyball team hosted the division quarter-finals Oct. 28 with Martensville A and Leask, with Martensville advancing to the next level.
The Grade 7 and 8 class goes to We Day in Saskatoon Nov. 6 while the Grade 9 class has Take our Kids to Work Day.
The Remembrance Day service at the school is Nov. 7 at 10:45 a.m. in the gym. The Grade 10s will host, with the theme Our Freedom, Their Sacrifice.
There is a free hot dog lunch for parents of K-6 students, with a program and book sale to follow, Nov. 13.
For magazine sales, every student who sold magazines won a prize. Winners of the draws were Savannah Sutherland, Darbi Werezak and Connor Wainwright.
The Borden Bruins cross-country team had 13 runners at the division meet with four runners in the top 10: Emma Pidwerbesky, first, and Brooklyn Gader, second, in junior girls' 4K; Duncan Sutherland, third, and Eric Westad, fourth, in senior boys' 6K. These students advanced to provincials at Little Loon Provincial Park. As a team, these four runners placed seventh out of 18 for 1A schools.
Remembrance Day Services Nov. 11 are hosted by the Borden Lions in the community centre and by the Radisson Royal Purple Radisson Hall, both services beginning at 10:45 a.m.
