Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club holds achievement day

Dr. Larry Stoyko, who was the physician at the Borden Union Hospital for a few years, passed away June 1 at Didsbury, Alta., at the age of 61. Dr. Stoyko is survived by his wife Olga, daughters Carrie and Gillian, their spouses and three grandsons.

Dr. Larry Stoyko, who was the physician at the Borden Union Hospital for a few years, passed away June 1 at Didsbury, Alta., at the age of 61. Dr. Stoyko is survived by his wife Olga, daughters Carrie and Gillian, their spouses and three grandsons.

The Crown Hill 4-H Beef Club held their Achievement Day June 22 at the Quonset on the farm of Derek and Bev Reid, northeast of Hafford. Eighteen members completed their questionnaires and judging competition in the morning, then participated in their show classes after lunch.

The junior members are Cody Shumanski, Hunter and Cole Reid, Boden Letkeman, Abigail and Cheyanne Roth, Jamie Attrux, Courtney and Justin Yasieniuk and Hannah Remus.

Results for the juniors for record books, questionnaires and judging were: Cody - 88, 65 and 75 per cent, Hunter - 96, 85 and 74 per cent; Cole - 95, 100 and 79 per cent; Boden - 88, 81 and 78 per cent; Abigal - 93, 88 and 81 per cent; Cheyanne - 93, 70 and 78 per cent; Jamie - 94, 96 and 80; Courtney - 92, 100 and 74 per cent; Justin - 93, 92 and 82 per cent; and Hannah - 89, 92 and 78 per cent.

In classes, Cody was first in heifer class 1, first in two-year cow/calf, third in class 2 steer and had the Grand Champion Female. Hunter's steer was Grand Champion. Cole was sixth in showmanship, third with his heifer and first in class 1 with his steer. Boden was sixth in grooming, fifth in showmanship and fourth in steer class 1. Abigail was first in grooming and showmanship, second in class 2 heifer and second in class 3 steer. Cheyanne was second in grooming and showmanship and third in class 2 steer. Jamie placed third in grooming and fifth in steer class 3. Courtney was fourth in grooming and in showmanship, first in class 3 steer and won Reserve Champion Steer. Justin was fifth in grooming, third in showmanship and second in class 2 steer. Hannah's steer was fifth in class 2.

In intermediates, record book, questionnaire and judging results were: Jessica Attrux - 92 per cent, 60 per cent, 77 per cent; Rachel Sutherland - 94 per cent, 81 per cent, 90 per cent; Morgan Attrux - 92 per cent, 70 per cent, 80 per cent; and Kolten Yasieniuk - 93 per cent, 65 per cent, 85 per cent.

Jessica was third in grooming, fourth in showmanship, first in class 1 heifer, second in class 1 steer. Rachel was first in grooming and showmanship and won both top groomsman and top showman. She was first in the class 2 steer and first in class 2 heifer, and won Grand Champion Heifer. Morgan was fourth in grooming, third in showmanship, third in class 2 heifer and third in class 3 steer. Kolten won second in grooming and showmanship and first in class 3 steer.

Seniors' marks for record books, questionnaires and judging were: Anna Verbonac - 98 per cent, 69 per cent, 79 per cent; Brittany Attrux - 94 per cent, 70 per cent, 70 per cent; Ben Verbonac - 82 per cent, 77 per cent, 80 per cent; and Tyler Yasieniuk - 85 per cent, 73 per cent, 92 per cent.

Anna placed first in grooming and showmanship, second in class 1 heifer, second in two-year cow/calf, first in three-year cow/calf, fifth in class 1 steer and had the Reserve Champion Female. Brittany was fourth in grooming and showmanship, fourth in class 1 heifer and fourth in class 2 steer. Ben was third in grooming, second in showmanship, first in class 1 heifer, fourth in class 3 steer and had the Reserve Champion Heifer. Tyler was second in grooming, third in showmanship and first in class 1 steer.

Receiving trophies and plaques were Hunter for Grand Champion Steer, Courtney for Reserve Champion Steer, Cody for Grand Champion Female, Anna for three-year cow/calf and Rachel for Top Groomsman, Top Showman, Grand Champion Heifer and shared the Grand Aggregate Award with Anna.

Each member that placed with their animals or got first, second or third in classes received awards such as tooled leather belts, duffle bags, overalls, gift certificates, halters, T-shirts, etc. Each member got a certificate and 4-H related gifts. The Humanitarian Award for hard work and dedication went to Brittany Attrux.

The judge for the day was Claude Wasden of Spiritwood, who runs a 100-cow operation and has been involved in 4-H for 24 years. He has three daughters in the 4-H program and has shown cattle or judged locally, at Agribition and at the Denver show. He gave good advice to all the members as he placed the animals, and in grooming and showmanship.

The members will be taking their animals to the Saskatoon 4-H Junior Showcase July 4 to 7 to show and sell.

Radisson Royal Purple members and a guest met at the home of Tina Hessell for a barbecue and their final meeting before the summer break. The lodge will again be having an ice cream sundae booth at the Radisson Fair and will sponsor five classes - four in memory of the following individuals: Joy Froom, Vera Hamel, Kay Garnett and Myrna Condon; and one class by the lodge itself. Meetings will resume Sept. 1 at 7:30 p.m.

Borden Friendship Club held their last potluck supper and birthdays June 25, with 48 members and guests present. The club does not meet for meetings during the summer. The next event will be the August supper and birthdays Aug. 27. The birthday cakes and ice cream June 25 were brought by Elizabeth Derksen and Marlene Derbawka. There were five June birthdays and 10 July birthday people on hand to blow out the candles. Entertainment for the evening was Avery Fairbrother, playing electric guitar and singing a number of familiar tunes such as Bobby McGee, The Gambler, Brown Eyed Girl, Country Roads, Pirate on the River Saskatchewan, closing with some he had written for his CD - Big Oak Tree and I Remember. Avery just graduated from Grade 12 and plans to go to college in the fall to study accounting.

The Borden Lions belong to Lions International, whose motto is We Serve. The membership fee paid by each member goes to cover administration so all proceeds from fundraisers go to charity.

At Borden they donated to Borden firefighters, Borden Care Home, Busy Bees Preschool, Borden Community Centre, student peace poster, student speak-offs and a post-secondary scholarship. As knights of the blind, they support Saskatchewan Eye Bank, CNIB, the Canadian Diabetes Association, diabetes screening clinics, dog guides, Sight and Service and Lions Club International Foundation. They will also assist an individual or family in crisis. They host the carol festival, Remembrance Day service and angel choir.

Executive are president Lion John Buswell, vice-president Sharon Assman, secretary Bob Wardhaugh and treasurer Sandra Long. The Borden Lions thank everyone for their support.
