MAIDSTONE — The Maidstone Drop In Centre’s first meeting of the year was held Jan. 5. Low turnout for the Christmas supper was discussed. Some changes will be made for next year.
Ron Adie made a trolley for the decorated Christmas tree so it can be put away in the games room after Christmas and just brought out when needed for late Christmas parties. A tree cover is to be purchased to keep it dust free.
A minute of silence at the beginning of the meeting was observed to remember members who passed away in 2014. They were Teresa Kennedy, Gertie Rutlidge, Jessie Buckley, Ray Hartman, Milt McMillan, Mable Stewart and Hettie Richardson.
Shannon Smith will see that their names are added to the members’ plaque.
Judith Holmberg read and recorded the minutes in place of Jean Hartman, who is spending the winter in the south with her sister.
Chili on a bun will be hosted at noon Jan. 21. This is open to the public. Charge for those who don’t donate food is $5.
Cynthia Donald’s 90th birthday come and go tea was held at the centre Jan. 3.
Young Mothers use the centre Tuesday mornings from 9 a.m. to noon while older children attend play school.
There were four winners of gift certificates drawn at the Christmas supper. They were Norma Lott, Norma Hougen, Rose Danychuk and Lil Burgess.
We are in need of new members. Members can use the pool table and shuffleboard tables and equipment for carpet bowling and darts is available. Cards are played Monday afternoons and bingo Wednesdays. Both start at 2 p.m. Age to join is 55. Come and have some fun in 2015.
Cards were played Jan. 5 with high score going to Bev Stewart and low to Margaret MacEachern, who supplied lunch.
Mary Lundell passed away at age 97. She was not a member of the seniors’ centre, but until she went to Pine Island Lodge she could be called upon at the last minute to play cards and fill up a table of players. She could fill in regardless of what game was being played. She also attended a lot of the activities held at the centre. Her funeral was held at the Legion Hall Jan. 8 with members of her family conducting the service.
