While adults complain about the duration and temperatures this winter the students at Ratushniak Elementary School in Maidstone continue to grin and giggle as they enjoy the bounty of snow.

Last week the SRC hosted a winter festival for the entire school with a variety of fun activities. The weather was still chilly, but the students who had been cooped up with indoor recesses earlier in the month didn't seem to mind at all.

They began the event with a parade of champions and the singing of the national anthem and then broke into classroom groups to compete in the challenges. The deep snow made it nearly impossible to cross the finish line in the sack race without falling, but participants didn't stop smiling.

Three-person skis demonstrated a need to co-operate and milk crate snowshoes offered a lesson in patience.

There were relays, games and a giant bowling competition with children on sleds knocking down the pins at the bottom of the hill. It was almost as fun to watch as it was to participate as the students cheered each other on.

The final event was a giant tug-of-war before the students headed inside to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate. Team pride and an appreciation and gratitude for the Canadian winter was evident as the children enjoyed the weather and the kind of fun impossible to re-create without the snow.
