Hockey played on natural ice April 24

I received a phone call the evening of April 24, letting me know there was a hockey game in progress in the Edam Community Centre. Thanks to David Stuart, I was able to get photos of the final hockey game of the season on natural ice.

I received a phone call the evening of April 24, letting me know there was a hockey game in progress in the Edam Community Centre. Thanks to David Stuart, I was able to get photos of the final hockey game of the season on natural ice. The ice was still in excellent shape and the guys were in fine form as they played.

The Vipers took on the Maniacs with the Vipers winning the game. The Vipers consisted of Jesse Blais, Shawn Blais, Bryce Thom, Brandon Wall, Dave Latendresse, Danny Harty, Jacob Troesch, Camille Baillargeon, Kelly Baillargeon, Randy Russett and Gilbert LaClare. The Maniacs had the following players: Brett Blaquiere, Brennan Weitzel, Brody Roach, O'Neil Baillargeon, John Grant, Mike Weber, Tyler Weber, Cole McCaffrey, Kyle Esquirol, Jeremy Kobes, Adrian Edwards and Mitch Stuart.

It was also rumored that this is not the record for the latest game in the season. It was remembered, by one of the senior gentlemen in town, that in the 1950s the latest game was in early May. It would be interesting to see who else can remember such an event in the area.

Thanks to Shanae Blaquiere for submitting the following.

There will be a Live Different talent show fundraiser in the H. Hardcastle School gymnasium May 9 at 7 p.m., hosted by Brandi Kobes (Grade 12), Kennedy Schaefer (Grade 10), Taya Cole (Grade 9), and myself (Grade 12). The aim of the evening is to both raise funds which would allow us to partake in Hero Holidays through the Live Different organization and to provide an excellent evening of entertainment to friends, family, community members and visitors.

Live Different is a Canadian charitable organization that focuses on creating positive change in the world. Hero Holiday, the sector of Live Different we are involved with, provides an opportunity for high school students to do humanitarian work in third-world countries. Volunteers participate in activities such as the construction of a house and the distribution of food and supplies.

This summer, Kennedy and Taya will volunteer in Mexico; I will volunteer in the Dominican Republic. Brandi has previously attended a Hero Holiday and has decided to become involved with the Live Different Academy. She will study an international social justice curriculum in Mexico, host Hero Holidays for other volunteers and take part in various humanitarian projects in the upcoming academic year.

Each volunteer is responsible for raising money to participate in a Hero Holiday. We have decided to combine our fundraising efforts to host the Live Different talent show fundraiser. The night will feature local talent and entertainment, a silent auction of bake sale items, a live auction and a raffle. The talent show roster offers a variety of performances by various people within the community and from the surrounding areas, including but not limited to dramatic performances, musical acts, a juggling performance and a gymnastics routine.

We believe in being transparent about how the funds will be distributed. Kennedy and Taya are responsible for raising a minimum of $1,395 each; I am responsible for raising $2,595; Brandi is responsible for raising $1,000. Funds will be divided equally between the four of us. The funds will be attributed to the expenses of the Live Different organization, such as building materials and volunteer accommodation costs, but will not be allocated to cover personal expenses. All volunteers are asked to cover their own travel costs to and from Toronto.

We readily welcome any donations or help. If you would like to contribute your time or an item for the bake sale, auction or raffle, please contact a volunteer. There will be many opportunities to help our cause on the evening of May 9; you may choose to donate to our collective or to a specific volunteer. Donations over $20 are tax deductible.

It shall also be noted that although the H. Hardcastle School generously offered their facilities to host this event, the Live Different talent show fundraiser is not affiliated with the H. Hardcastle School, its students or its staff.

Brandi, Kennedy, Taya and I wish to extend our gratitude for your support in advance. Help in any form is greatly appreciated - whether it be your donations, time or help in endorsing the event - and will not be forgotten. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns, or visit our Facebook event page by searching "Live Different Talent Show Fundraiser." We hope to see you at our fundraiser the evening of Thursday, May 9.
