Happy Canada Day from the Town of Unity!

A collaboration between the Unity & District Heritage Museum and the Unity Chamber of Commerce created a great way to celebrate Canada Day.

UNITY — The town of Unity came out in full force for a day of celebration on July 1 at the Unity & District Heritage Museum.

The day started off with the museum board members cooking up a tasty breakfast of pancakes, sausages, scrambled eggs and hashbrowns. Following breakfast, a church service was held on the grounds in the relocated Swarthmore Church, led by Gary Neigum.

Many retired farmers and mechanics decided to forego the service, instead turning their attention to the small stationary engines that were being started.

At noon, guests were treated to a fly-by by Norbert Glatt, who flew his 1942 Tiger Moth over the museum grounds just prior to the opening ceremonies. Museum vice-president, Azure McGonigle, was joined by members of the Unity Legion Branch No. 90 and Mayor Bob Abel to welcome everyone to the celebration.

With so much to see, do and hear, visitors to the museum had the opportunity to tour through the multiple buildings located on the grounds, looking at items from the past. Velvet Hand, a cover band from Saskatoon, were the headlining entertainer for the event, with local musician Robert Lauinger and friends warming up the crowd.

And there was no shortage of activities for the youngsters either. Armed with a ride on the train speeder, learning how to make rope, horse wagon rides, a bouncy house, face painting, a sand pit, a balloon man and some creepy crawly snakes and lizards, kids were keeping their parents moving from one activity to the next.

But there were also some fun and interesting activities for the big kids. Volunteers of the museum gave rides around the grounds in some of the antique vehicles, made fresh bread in a clay oven and a chance to see a blacksmithing demonstration.

The afternoon wrapped up with a smokie supper on the museum grounds before the sunlight dipped below the horizon, giving the perfect backdrop for the fireworks to be set off.
