I have been away on a most enjoyable three-week holiday at my daughter Linda and Larry Fiddler's in Medicine Hat.
Cards were played at the Maidstone Drop in Centre Oct 7. High score went to Tillie Linkert and low to Jean Stewart. Oct. 14, high score went to Jean Hartman and low to Noelle Coulthart. Oct. 21, high score went to Bev Stewart, with a perfect score and low to Jean Hartman. I was home in time for Bingo Oct. 23, with Joan Smith and Margaret MacEachern doing the calling. Lunch was provided by Norma Hougan and Jean Stewart.
Medicine Hat is a very pretty city with lots of trees, hills, dales and parks within the city. The old part of the city close to the South Saskatchewan River is still recovering from the spring floods. Many homes are still not habitable and may be condemned. Their very large seniors' centrehad to be completely abandoned. Many seniors went there every day as they served nutritious hot meals at a reasonable price. Some activities have been moved to different places in the city, until a decision is made where to rebuild. But I don't think it will be next to the river.
My daughter helps as a volunteer to make nutritious lunches for school children, who would otherwise go without a noon meal. In some cases this is their only meal of the day. The 380 lunches they pack each day are sponsored and funded by the local food banks and donations from grocery stores and gardeners who have extra produce to give.
It seems ironic to me that our government can spend millions of dollars on goods to other countries and not have money so their own seniors, single parents and disabled veterans have a decent income to live on.
