Darwin Atcheynum (left), local artist and sculptor, created two carved jack-o-lanterns Tuesday at the Frontier Mall for its first Pumpkin Festival. In this photo, the grower of the pumpkin, John Leite (right), joins him. Leite, who farms south of Battleford, grows moderately-sized pumpkins each year for his grandchildren. But this year, they kept growing and growing until they were too big for his grandkids to take back to Calgary. Leite said the biggest pumpkins were too large even to weigh; when he tried, the stepladder he was using to balance them collapsed. What's the secret to such sizeable pumpkins? Lots of manure, says Leite.

The Pumpkin Festival is being hosted by the Frontier Mall in support of the Battlefords United Way. Local artists have carved, painted or otherwise decorated pumpkins for the public to view and to vote on by donating their spare change for their favourite pumpkin or pumpkins.

All donations of $10 or more will receive a charitable receipt from the Battlefords United Way.

Members of the public who would like to take their favourite pumpkin home may also bid on them through a silent auction. Most of the pumpkins were donated by No Frills, located at the Frontier Mall. The two large pumpkins carved by Atcheynum came from the farm of John Leite.

Mall administrator Janice Sander says this is the first Pumpkin Festival, and she hopes it grows to become a special event people look forward to each year.

As in previous years, the Frontier Mall is also hosting a Halloween Howl on Halloween day, with trick or treating from a city-wide candy drop off, activities and crafts for the kids from 4 to 7 p.m. and photo opportunities.
