With 175 entries in the Neilburg Royal Canadian Legion's annual Remembrance Day contest, the two judges had a very difficult time selecting the winners for the 2013 competition.

The top prizes were announced at the Nov. 11 ceremonies in the Neilburg Community Hall Monday morning. Linda Walde and Margaret Chibri, both teachers, had the difficult task of making the decisions for each category.

Marilyn Ostensoe announced the names of the prize winners at the service. Those present were asked to come to the front of the auditorium and accept their certificates from Legion member, Richard Walde, who shook each individual's hand. Winners represented both Neilburg Composite School and Marsden Jubilee School.

In the primary division, which includes Grades 1, 2, and 3, Ashtyn Laclare created the first prize colour poster. Justine Nattress and Emma Benoit from Marsden Jubilee School, were second and third. In the black and white poster category, Aliana Worman was first; Aiden Briggs took second and Logan Blackbeard was third. This section did not compete in the essay and poetry categories.

In the junior division, Grades 4 through 6, Ashlyn Loy was the winner with first place in colour poster and Mehaliah Foulkes was second. Since the judges couldn't determine who should win the third prize, the ladies declared a tie between Tidja Hoeppner-Basha and Braxton Snell. Ann Hewko won first prize for her black and white poster. She also received second in the essay category.

Placing second in black and white poster was Ethel Borja and Kyle Williams was third. Braxton Snell also won first place in the essay section. Kaylyn Koch was third with her essay. Tidja Hoeppner-Basha was first in the poetry class, with Brayden Koch second and Hallie Goodfellow third.

Intermediate winners, Grades 7 through 9, were for colour poster: first, Jordan Czerniak; second, Jordan McGarry; and third, Jarrod Ryan. For the black and white poster division, Brylen Lane was first, Carter Cammidge was second and Colby Urlacher placed third. No essays or poems were submitted at this level.

Finally, the senior winners, Grades 10 through 12, were: poetry - Danielle Scott. There was no second or third for this section. Janessa McKenzie won for top colour poster with Mikayla Watson second and Abigal Lambert third. Laura Hegel, who came in second at the provincial level last year for her poster, was top once again for her black and white poster. Danielle Scott was second and Jenelle Murphy was third.

Best of luck to each of the winners from Marsden and Neilburg who will have their artwork and literary compositions entered at other levels of this annual competition.
