Remembrance Day services at all three schools this week

Halloween was quiet and uneventful this year.

Halloween was quiet and uneventful this year. There were several conversations started as to whether the novelty of Halloween has worn off, quoting fellow residents or relatives away from town stating the number of kids they had was down, in spite of plus 7 temperatures. Some areas of town did remark on an increase in trick-or-treaters.

Even though on Nov. 2 you could bike around town in plus temperatures, Old Man Winter returned with a bang that evening with plenty of snow.

No matter where you are or what you are doing, take time this Remembrance Day and remember the sacrifices by those veterans we know, and those we never did know, who granted us the freedom we take for granted in this country. Lest we forget.

Remembrance Day Services will take place Nov. 11 at St. Peter's Church at 10:30 a.m. Let's give our Legion members the respect they deserve by attending.

Unity Public School students had a day off Oct. 28 as teachers headed to a PD day. There was plenty of fun to be had at UPS on Halloween as the Grade 6 class and their teachers set up the entire gym with a Halloween themed carnival, including a haunted house. In addition to the carnival, students held a costume parade and each class held a class party making it a Halloween afternoon of fun.

The school hosted their Remembrance Day Service Nov. 6. UPS is so pleased the Legion sends such good representation to help put a personal touch and face to the reasons why it's important for children to remember.

UCHS continues to be a very busy school. Both junior volleyball teams headed to district championships Oct. 30, after earning a berth at conferences the previous weekend. The junior boys were up against some tough battles and came out with a fourth place standing. The junior girls, who played in Cut Knife, went through to a gold medal win, earning the Battlewest District title.

Senior girls won first at their volleyball conference playdowns so advance to regionals held in Macklin this weekend. The boys will soon follow.

The fruit sale drive comes to a close today.

Remembrance Day services will be held at UCHS Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.

St. Peter's will hold their Remembrance Day Services Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.

Congratulations to Con Alexander Trucking Ltd. who are celebrating their 30th anniversary as a business this weekend with a banquet and dance for past and present employees and customers. Showing no signs of slowing down, the business is in a construction phase of a new shop and offices, set to move into during the summer of 2014.

The Unity Community Resource Centre is hosting a fundraiser at the theatre of a wine and cheese and movie night, including door prizes. Only 100 tickets will be sold for $20 each and they are available from any UCRC member, the town office or at the resource centre.

The Unity Facilities Committee was pleased to move the big hand on the fundraising meter to the $1.5 million mark following some donations as well as the steak and lobster night. The committee reminds residents fundraising is ongoing to see the two infrastructure projects - new swimming pool and a ground floor hall - through to completion. You can view the sponsorship opportunities on the Town of Unity website.

Live hockey action fills the arena with the buzz of plenty of teams practising and playing games in their seasons. Hats off to the coaches, managers and co-ordinators who take on the job of ensuring everyone's seasons go smoothly. You can see the rink schedule by checking out the paper copy hanging in the rink lobby or checking the Town of Unity website.

Coffee row conversation most certainly revolves around the Riders. The last regular season game loss was part of the topic, while the excitement arising at the home playoff game this weekend is also reviewed. Definitely rowers gave thought to their relatives and friends who they will remember on Remembrance Day. And, weather is always a hot topic especially when it revolves around the four-letter word, s-n-o-w!

So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
