Paynton resident Mark Margerison received an award for his heroic act of saving a family from a water-filled ditch after the driver lost control and went off the road last spring. April 27 of this year, wading into freezing-cold, chest-deep water, Mark pulled three children and their mother from a car that had hydroplaned off the road near Cut Knife. The humble hero says he only did what anyone else would have done. While this may be, I'm not convinced just anyone would have jumped into the water repeatedly to rescue the family.
Nov. 8, Maidstone and Paynton fire departments along with RCMP, ambulance and tow trucks were called out to the icy highway between Paynton and Maidstone for a handful of accidents. Some were single vehicle accidents where the driver just needed to be pulled out of the ditch and other more serious accidents required the Jaws Of Life and an ambulance.
Emergency personnel risked their safety to slow traffic down before getting to the accident scenes while other emergency workers moved as quickly as possible before the next call.
Please be aware of road conditions before heading out this winter. Be sure to pay particular attention to break lights, emergency services vehicles and flag people. The roads can be deceiving, creating a false sense of safety, so make sure you have good winter tires and look for the signs that there may be an emergency scene ahead.
