Radisson Royal Purple held their Oct. 3 meeting at the home of Tina Hessell.

Special guests were Sask. RP President Colleen MacDonald and HRL Deanna Brazier of Choiceland.

RP president MacDonald spoke of her motto for 2011-12 - recruit, revive and retain. We need to think of ways to get new members to help revive our lodges and retain the loyal ones we do have, she said.

She spoke of how the buddy system is to work across Canada over the next four years. Each lodge needs to set goals and the committee in charge will help each lodge to achieve goals. We all need to come up with ideas on how to attract young people to join. Radisson is buddied up with Asquith and River City Lodges, but none were able to attend this meeting. A junior lodge (14-21 years) with girls and boys is being set up in Newfoundland and hopefully more will materialize.

The lodge set their Christmas tea, bake sale and grocery hamper raffle for Dec. 10. They will be arranging the service for Remembrance Day in Radisson Hall at 10:45 a.m. with lunch after the service. A donation for $50 will go to Borden School to help with costs for students to attend a drinking and driving presentation in Langham Oct. 14. Radisson Lodge has been selling walk-a-thon tickets and a total of $156 was sent in for the Oct. 15 draw at the event in Nipawin. Due to the election, the next RP meeting will be past honoured royal ladies night Tuesday, Nov. 8, with supper at a local restaurant prior to the meeting.

Congratulations to Luke and Kandice Walker on the birth of Darrel Leland, born Oct. 2 and weighing 7 lbs., 10 oz - a baby brother for Zoe. Proud grandparents are Darryl and Peggy Walker and Lee and Diane Tracksell, all of Borden.

Borden Community Centre tables were decorated with fall colours and assorted gourds on black cloths, Oct. 8, for the 80th birthday celebration honouring Peter Hiebert of Langham. Daughters Diane Tracksell and Joann Flath welcomed everyone and thanked all for coming.

Joann read from 1931 - Remembering Back When, a number of things that happened the year Peter was born, such as all the grasshoppers, Dick Tracy comics beginning, Empire State Building opening, Montreal winning the Stanley Cup and a stamp was 2 cents, gas was 10 cents a gallon, 25 cents to go to a movie, etc. Musical entertainment was provided by Allan Wiebe playing piano and Richard Wiebe on guitar and singing. Peter joined in with his guitar, with four selections - His Eye is on the Sparrow, Wooden Heart, You are my Sunshine and My Okanagan Queen.

There was a PowerPoint presentation showing Peter in his younger years, the family growing up on the farm east of Borden, family outings and get-togethers and many of horses and dogs which Peter always had both of on the farm. The family (Diane, Joann, Lorraine and Larry, grandchildren and great-grandchildren) presented Peter with red and yellow flowers.

Whenever one of the great grandchildren phone Grandpa and ask what he is doing, he says jokingly that he is counting money, so they presented him with an automatic counter jar so he wouldn't have to count any more. Peter played a number of tunes on guitar and harmonica, Gordon Flath gave the blessing, and then everyone was invited to partake of a bounteous lunch and a birthday cake which featured a photo of one of his teams of horses.

The RM of Great Bend No. 405 will be holding a municipal election Oct. 26 in the RM office, for a division two councillor. Incumbent Archie Wainwright and Scott Sutherland are in the running for the position.

In Borden School news, the volleyball teams will be in tournaments Oct. 15 - junior girls in Osler, junior boys in Hepburn, senior boys in Langham and senior girls in Hafford. Good luck to the five students who are going to provincials at Middle Lake in cross-country running Oct. 15. Division results from Oct. 5 are: Duncan Sutherland, second, Eric Westad, sixth and Ryan Howell, seventh in the midget boys 4 km run and Jasmine Bezugly, first and Emma Pidwerbesky, second in the midget girls 3 km run.

Congrats to Michael Crabb who was selected to attend the U of S High School Select Jazz Ensemble Oct. 14 to 16. The Borden School Scholastic book fair is Wednesday, Oct. 19 at 1 p.m. and everyone is welcome. The students from Grades 7 -12 attended a drinking and driving presentation in Langham Oct. 14.

Education Week is Oct. 17 - 21, with a hot lunch at school Oct. 19. There is no school Oct. 24 (a professional development day for teachers) nor Oct. 28 (parent- teacher interviews).

Today, the Borden volunteer firefighters are holding a hot dog sale from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Borden Fire Hall. Raffle tickets are available for donated prizes from firemen and local businesses.
