School activities all back in full swing

Unity News
Unity Curling
The Unity Curling Rink, although disappointed with some cancellations, continues to be a busy venue for this winter with two successful events just held and a whole slate of events on tap for this new year.

Mid-January already and it seems like we’ve just barely put away Christmas decorations. Liking this winter’s weather or not so much? I like that we haven’t experienced the winter’s wrath we did in 2012 and we haven’t experienced as much of the “polar vortex” as we did last year, but I’m also one of those people who wish winter would be a little shorter each year!

Things at St. Peter’s School have gotten a whole lot busier. The St. Peter’s choir and band are ramping up their practices and performances for the spring as they will be part of a January mass as well as preparing for the annual music festival.

St. Peter’s School curling will take place Jan. 19 to 23, wrapping up with a mini-spiel Jan. 23 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Students will also be skating on Jan. 13, 21 and 28.

The library is also a busy place as it will include student storytelling, and the ever popular AR reading program. Students will also enjoy the Mark Mallett concert at the church the evening of Jan. 29.

Unity Public School is happy to be welcoming new babies. With Mrs. Carleton having her baby in December 2014, the kids are now anticipating the arrival of Mrs. Pool’s baby due in February.

Mr. Jlidcka’s class, who are currently studying the book The Hobbithad the pleasure of viewing the showing of The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armiesat the Unity theatre and will now be preparing reviews to compare the big screen version to the book they are reading.

Basketball and curling are also part of the action at UPS. And, UPS choirs and some classes are preparing their music festival entries for the upcoming 2015 edition of the music festival.

Unity Composite High School is continually an action-packed venue. With everything in full swing including preparations for semester one finals coming up at the end of the month, there is never a dull moment at the high school.

Basketball will ramp up again as teams will be in the last part of their season preparation for district playdowns. Spring drama is in early stages of preparation for the Regional Drama Festival.  SADD, SLC and yearbook committees are busy with their seasons, planning programs and activities for students. The UCHS ACTIVATE campaign is in full swing promoting a positive environment for students at UCHS. And the travel club is getting excited for their Easter trip to Europe.

Finally, the grads are now in the last half of their preparations for graduation 2015. They held a bottle drive this past week as their main fundraiser for their upcoming events.

In hockey news, Unity bids farewell to long time referee/official, Fred Winterhalt. Fred officiated his last game in December and closed the books on a 22-year career on the ice.

All hockey teams are now in gearing-up stages as they prepare for both league and provincial playdowns. You can always check the town website at www.townofunity.com for a complete arena schedule or check out the one posted each week at the rink.

Unity alumni hockey players, Adam Tuffs and Scott Brownlee, were inducted into the Saskatoon Sports Hall of Fame as both players were part of the Saskatoon Contacts team and won the National Telus Cup Hockey event.

The Unity Skating Club will also have a busy second half of the season as they host a regional competition Feb. 21 and 22 and will be following that up quickly with their annual ice carnival.

The Unity Sports Wall of Fame is looking for nominations of individuals, teams and builders for the 2015 induction ceremony.  Contact Carey at 306-228-2621 or print a nomination form from the Town of Unity website.

The curling rink saw yet another event cancelled due to lack of entries. It’s the second one this year offering major sponsorship in prizes. Sadly disappointing, yet no one is taking it as a sign of failure as we still have some great events coming up and the two events we have hosted were great successes. They were a 10-team boxing day spiel as well as the wildly popular Team Laycock Decisive Farming Curlingville clinic and meet and greet hosted Jan. 14.

Organizers are hopeful to build off the momentum of these two events with the remaining men’s open, oilmen’s, ladies’ open and year-end funspiel, all including lots of action.

The Unity Community Multiple 4-H Club is holding their craft retreat weekend Jan. 23, 24 and 25. The retreat starts Friday at 6 p.m. and continues nearly round the clock to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Legion Hall in Unity. Deadline for registration is Jan. 19 so contact Corinne at JayDee AgTech for your registration.

The Unity Wildlife Federation is holding their annual wild game supper and awards night Feb. 7 at the Unity Community Centre Hall. Advance tickets only and I assure you they sell out fast.  Tickets are available at Unity Auto Body, Unity Radiator Shop, Unity Motor Products and Sperle’s Tire.

Coffee row folks are back in routine. They are debating the weather that has been and what’s expected for the rest of winter. Some are talking of their hot holidays this winter. Some are reviewing their favourite hockey teams or their favourite curling teams. All are part of the community culture of coffee row that we all recognize as a mainstay in our community. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
