Schools planning Remembrance Day ceremonies for next week

Well? Was Halloween eventful or uneventful in your neighbourhood? And tell me, how did Nov. 1 sneak up so fast? A big shout-out to Amanda Ubell, of Dare to Dream Photography in Unity, for letting us use her Unity Minor Football photos last week.

North West Terminal at Unity is still working its way through the piles of grain accumulated from this fall's harvest.

Well? Was Halloween eventful or uneventful in your neighbourhood? And tell me, how did Nov. 1 sneak up so fast?

A big shout-out to Amanda Ubell, of Dare to Dream Photography in Unity, for letting us use her Unity Minor Football photos last week.

Unity Public School students had a day off Oct. 28 as teachers headed to a PD day. The school will host their Remembrance Day service Nov. 6 at 11 a.m. UPS is so pleased the Legion sends such good representation to help put a personal touch and face to the reasons why it's important for children to remember.

UCHS continues to be a very busy school. Students also had Oct. 28 off for a teacher PD day but that doesn't keep them lying low.

Senior girls A volleyball team headed to Outlook for their last tournament before conferences are hosted in Unity Nov. 2. A third place finish in round robin left the team needing to win, however a tough Rosthern squad eliminated that option. The senior B volleyball girls hosted a home tournament and came out with the gold medal.

The junior A volleyball girls were in Cut Knife for conferences and came out first in their pool sending them to district playdowns Oct. 30. The junior B volleyball girls hosted their home tournament, along with the senior B girls, and also won gold.

The junior A boys headed to Wilkie for conference playdowns and came out with a second place, also sending them to district championships.

UCHS Warrior football travelled to Wynyard for the provincial quarter-final in six-man football. It was a back and forth game with numerous score changes but the Warriors were unable to overcome Wynyard at home and ended their season.

Students have collected winter wear for the Share the Warmth campaign, and will be distributing it soon. Fruit sales are in high gear as this popular product is being sold by UCHS students as a fundraiser for the many events students are able to enjoy as part of their school experience.

Remembrance Day services will be held at UCHS Nov. 8 at 2 p.m.

St. Peter's band kids have delivered the cookie dough they were selling as part of their fundraiser. As well, the Lamontange fundraiser products should be arriving in the near future; the students are thankful for the support they received in their playground equipment fundraising efforts. St. Peter's will hold their Remembrance Day Services Nov. 6 at 2 p.m.

This past weekend the rink was buzzing with the busyness of the annual Sylvan Lake Hockey Camp with multiple divisions of kids having several sessions on ice to fine-tune their skills for the upcoming season. In addition, the Unity Miners held their first game of the season on home ice.

So, hockey fans, it's official. Games have started and it will be another exciting year at the rink. You can log onto the town website for the arena schedule for the winter. Now that hockey has begun, the rink activity will increase each week.

Unity Curling Club starts league action this week and the club is excited to see some top-notch teams coming to the Sifto Cash Spiel Nov. 15 weekend - McKee, Manners, Heitt and many more. Curling action is free to watch and you can enjoy the large windows at each sheet in addition to the overhead cameras streamed to the TVs at each sheet for those "close to the button" calls. Or you can join your favourite curler in the lounge after a game and watch sports highlights on the big screen.

After Unity United Church hosted two sittings at their fowl (or fall) supper, St. Peter's Parish is up next, hosting theirs Sunday, Nov. 3. Tickets are $10 per person and available at St. Peter's gift shop or Mitchell Agencies. Get yours while supplies last.

Speaking of fall suppers and food, kudos to the community groups who have had and are having events to benefit our local food bank.

Delta Co-op and Unity Credit Union donated the proceeds, totalling $673.06, from their annual pancake breakfast at the fall fair and trade show. The free Investor's Group Comedy Night sponsored by Lorianne Mawbey, IG Consultant, is benefitting the local food bank. Kim Berger's daycare held a special event with all children bringing something to assemble in a Thanksgiving basket for a family to enjoy a Thanksgiving dinner, and UCHS will once again be canvassing the town on Halloween from 4-6 p.m. for a food bank blitz. As well, Delta Co-op had a big Halloween basket up for grabs for everyone who brought in a donation for the food bank. One of the many ways our residents choose to give back to the community they live in.

A very exciting concert will be held at Unity United Church featuring the Gallery Singers, directed by Dianne Gryba and JoAnne Kasper, and the Prairie Notes Choir from Biggar, featuring soloist Kerry Anne Kutz, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m., with tickets only $15.

Those of you reading this column in Unity, and outside our community, there are numerous job (14 to be exact) opportunities listed in our local paper and the town office. Why not discover the opportUNITY in Unity? Rumors are circulating that our opportunities have caught on, with a newly erected sold sign on a recently closed business.

Remembrance Day Services will take place Nov. 11 at St. Peter's Church.

Coffee row conversation is a flurry of conversation as contributors talk of wavering faith in the Riders since the defeat that sent them to second spot in their loss to Calgary. Saskatchewan still holds a playoff spot though. Trains and their speed through town, the number of them on the move through town and the cargo they carry are discussed on a regular basis. And everyone is appreciating the weather thus far although curious conversation arises as to when winter will come, what it will behave like and how long it will last. So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week.
