Borden School held their Remembrance Day service Nov. 7. MCs were Mackenzie Piprell and Brooklyn Gader and organizers Mr. Dyck and the Grade 10 History class.
The MCs introduced special guests RCMP member Gary Pepin and village councillor Jamie Braderick, then gave a background story on why we hold Remembrance Day.
Wreaths were laid by Pepin for the RCMP, Braderick for the village, cadets Dyllan Tracksell and Kayla Knorr, Anne and Liam for Grade1/2, Katelyn and Sierra for Grade 3/4, Nicole and James for Grade 5/6, Colton and Natalie for Grade 7/8, Krysta and Justin for Grade 9/10 and Dallas and Myron for Grade 11/12.
Act of Remembrance was read by Justin Barth. The Grade 1 class sang Just One Candle, Grade 7 and 8 recited In Flanders Fields, Grades 2 to 6 sang "Highway of Heroes and Nikita Pascoe read her story about Trench Letter.
Dallas Burnett and Emma Pidwerbesky for Grade 11 and 12 created art tiles on wars, respect for sacrifices, explaining why respect is due to the soldiers of the past who died to make the world a place now. Shaun Dyck gave the Remembrance Day address, pointing out this is the 60th anniversary of the Korean War. He said 47,000 Canadians died in the Second World War and 27,000 perished in the Korean War. Canada has many around the world in peace keeping missions today.
A video, Remembering Memorial, by the Grade 10 class was shown then everyone sang God Save the Queen.
The Borden Lions hosted the Borden Remembrance Day service in the Community Centre Nov. 11, with about 120 in attendance. Officiating was Rev. Jan Bigland-Pritchard and playing piano was Sharon Assman. Laying wreaths were Ann Brand for veterans, Mayor David Buckingham for the village, Ron Saunders for the R.M. of Great Bend, Cpl. Luca Saunders who is a reservist with the North Sask regiment, and Patrick Piprell for his uncle Gordon who died in the Second World War. The Lions sponsor a peace poster contest for Grade 5 and 6 at Borden School and winning were: first, Jade Matte ($75); second, Angella Tracksell ($35); third, Savannah Sutherland ($25). Angela's poster will advance to districts as only Grade 6 posters advance. The posters by the students were on display at the hall for the service.
At Radisson the OORP hosted the service held at Radisson Hall with over 120 attending, Pastor Wallace Bornhuse officiated, Susan Rothenburger played the piano for the hymns, Jenna Mikituk was flag bearer and Ken Dillen spoke briefly of aboriginals who served then read the honour roll. Wreaths were laid by Stan Bandur for veterans, Cpl. Murray McCracken for the RCMP, Audrey Baker for the mothers, Hailey and her dad Darren Harris for the town, Brooklyn Boklaschuk for the school and Tina Hessell for the OORP. After the service Gerald Wiebe played a song about remembering that he had written and recorded.
Nov. 10, 47 members of Borden Friendship Club attended the Langham Theatrical Club's dinner theatre matinee, indulging in a wonderful turkey and ham dinner and then enjoyed the musical comedy, Way Out West In a Dress. The seniors were able to attend at a reduced price with funding from Sask Lotteries through the Borden Recreation Board. Door prize winner was Florence Neufeld of Borden and L. Jansen won the 50/50 draw of $299.50.
Borden senior boys' volleyball team placed second at conference finals in Elrose Nov. 9 and now will compete at regionals Nov. 15 and 16. Borden lost out to Dinsmore in the five- team playoff that included Elrose, LCBI, and Beechy.
Long-term reporter, freelance writer and photographer, Vivian Nemish, embarked on a new journey Nov. 2 when she wed her best friend Dan Barwell. The small intimate service took place at The Willow in Regina and officiating was marriage commissioner Walter Kyliuk of Radisson. The couple will reside in Regina where they will continue their writing careers.
Glenn Sutherland and daughter Rachel are in Regina this week showing their animals at the Shorthorn Show at Agribition on Nov. 15 and Rachel is selling her yearling bred heifer Clythe ManeTillie 30Z at the Shorthorn sale on Nov. 14.
