MUENSTER — St. Peter’s College will be all about math, with the college hosting the Canadian Math Kangaroo Contest for Kindergarten to Grade 12 students from across the area.
Over six million students from across the world take part in the competition. Fifty-five locations across the country are taking part in the event, with only four others in Saskatchewan.
Matthew Washkowsky, student services officer with St. Peter's College, said the Kangaroo Math contest offers a different way of looking at math problems with students given 75 minutes to work out 30 questions.
Washkowsky does say he is a bit biased being a former math teacher himself but the contest does offer a fun, different way of looking at the math.
“[Students] are getting a higher level of thinking out of it. They’re able to connect to the real work a lot better.”
The problems are very unique, Washkowsky said, with some questions being scenario-based, examining the odds-type of questions, while others just need some unique thinking to find the answer.
“It’s about engaging your inquiry process.”
Self-guided campus tours and activities will also be available for people throughout the day.

The competition will take place on Sunday, March 22 starting at 10 a.m. in Room 206 at the St. Peter’s College campus. The deadline to register is Sunday, March 1.
