Some youth in the Battlefords have decided to collect canned goods instead of candy this Halloween.
North Battleford Comprehensive High School students will be canvassing North Battleford neighborhoods and St. Vital students knocking on doors in Battleford. It's all part of Me to We's "We Scare Hunger" campaign.
Both of these schools have groups of students committed to the ideals promoted by Me to We, which call on youth to look beyond "me" working as "we" to collectively address social change. As stated on their Facebook page, NBCHS's Be the Change club is committed to making "a change locally and internationally." This matches the philosophy of St. Vital students.
All money raised by St. Vital students during its six years of continued commitment to such efforts have been equally divided between local needs and global needs as they also feel it is important to assist those in need both in their local community and the global community.
Both schools have individualized projects aimed towards raising awareness and funds for various issues about which they are passionate, but NBCHS and St. Vital students will attend We Day Saskatchewan on Nov. 6 at the Credit Union Centre in Saskatoon proud to have committed to the first of five broad-based campaigns promoted by Me to We this school year.
Last year you may have seen or helped students in the Battlefords collect pennies for the 'We Create Change' campaign. Along with other youth from across Canada, $1.4 million dollars were raised which translated into providing 56,000 people in developing countries with clean water sources for life. This year watch for youth collecting coins again, this time for the purpose of building schools.
If a youth shows up at your door seeking non-perishable foods on Halloween, bear in mind the Canadian statistic stating that "one in five parents said they skipped meals to ensure there was enough food for their children." The Battlefords Food Bank helps children and families avoid the need to make such decisions.
So watch for local youth on Halloween night and support their efforts to be "hunger heroes" as they gather food for local distribution.
