Summer is for creating childhood memories at the lake

The picture of the Sons of Norway picnic in last week's paper didn't identify the girls. The one in the yellow top is Marion Ottas and the other is Charlene Alexander, both Arlene Walker's daughters.

A delicious pasta luncheon was offered to folks at the Meota Community Hall July 17. They came, young and old, to partake of Pearl's cooking and enjoyed both the food and social time. This young fellow, Tom Strunk, from Saskatoon, wasn't ready for lunch until his great uncle, Mayor John MacDonald, woke him later.

The picture of the Sons of Norway picnic in last week's paper didn't identify the girls. The one in the yellow top is Marion Ottas and the other is Charlene Alexander, both Arlene Walker's daughters. The lady missed is Bev McCrimmon and she was making the bush pies the girls were cooking over the hot coals. She would take two slices of bread and make a sandwich with pie filling between and this was then toasted. The results are delicious.

Duplicate bridge was played at the Do Drop In July 15, and top score went to Margaret Dyck and Ross Morton. In second were Jane Groves and Mary Greenwald. They always have a nice evening playing cards.

The next bake sale at the United/Anglican Church will be on Aug. 2 at 9 a.m., so mark your calendar.

Kaiser was played on Friday afternoon with top scores going to Linda Ard and Herman Hoogeland. It's always a pleasant way to pass an afternoon.

Canasta games were enjoyed Friday evening, at the Do Drop In, with top marks being earned by Beulah Corbeil and Vern Iverson, then Barbara Soloninko and Arlene Walker, and third Gwen Lacerte and Janice Morton. With four tables in play all went smoothly and were played out evenly, as to time. We did miss our ladies from town who often come out. There's always nice lunch treats to go with the coffee.

Ken Parker of Olds, Alta., a former professor at the college there, spent a few years teaching English in China after he retired, and has been back to visit a couple times since. Now he's teaching a Chinese student, whose application to study in Canada was refused, on Skype on the Internet. They can see and hear one another and work for two hours daily, and he's doing very well. Ken has sponsored a Chinese student previously and had known this student from one of his classes over there and wanted to help him.

There are more than 60 fires in British Columbia alone and the smoke was so thick in Prince George Friday morning that the streetlights came on at 9 a.m.

Descendants of the late David and Mattie (Moore) Millar held a family reunion at the Battlefords Provincial Park July 13 with 66 family members attending.

Daily Vacation Bible School was held in the Meota community hall on the evenings of July 7-10. The children enjoy this every summer. Purity Lacey heads this project, carrying on after her late Aunt Jean Millar, the same Jean who taught school in Meota for many years.

Lots of family company have visited with Marion and Robert Iverson this summer. In early July they had their son Gordon and Angie Iverson from Slave Lake, Alta. for a few days. Also visiting was their grandson Dale and his wife Sarah with their son Matthew and daughter Taylor from Morinville, Alta. Other visitors were: their daughter Debbie and Bob Neville from Vernon, B.C.; their grandson Jason and Debra Neville and girls Hannah and Jacey from Cochrane, Alta.; and their granddaughter Allison Weigel and four children - Brooklyn, Ryane, Jorga and Max, from Lloydminster. On the weekend their son Don and Moni Iverson came from Cold Lake, Alta. along with their three girls, Annabelle, Rosie and Sophie. So the summer holidays means getting together with gramma and grampa every chance they get and getting to know one another, creating those childhood memories we talk about the rest of our lives.

Beulah Corbiel enjoyed the company of her son Blair and Erna and some of their family on the weekend as they attended a family reunion up at Picnic Lake.

Word has come of the passing of Emma (Jabush) Marsh, wife of the late Jim Marsh, of Sandwith. Her funeral was held on July 14 in the Sandwith Hall. She has a sister Linda Gatzke who lives in Davidson Manor in North Battleford. Emma had been a resident of Evergreen Lodge in Leoville before her passing.

There seems to be problems with our new Access TV channels, for example the program directory is stuck on Wed., July 16, and doesn't move so you can't find any program at any other time. Not too encouraging when they promised us better things. Several are black pages, nothing at all, so we must be patient and hope for a better tomorrow.

There also seems to be a number of folks who are suffering with different types of colds, and some are coughing a lot. Usually takes about a week to get over the worst of it.

Family home to the Winston and Bernice Tait residence recently were their sons Kevin and David. David was here from Edmonton, Alta. over the weekend. Kevin and his wife Jackie were here from Chilliwack, B.C. Their daughter Jaylene and Randy came out from North Battleford to visit with everyone, bringing their three sons - Gracesen, Bentley and Leeland. Also their daughter Shauna came from Saskatoon. It was a great time for family togetherness.

The Order of the Eastern Star is holding a come and go tea at the home of Linda Ard, in Meota, on Saturday, July 26, from 2-4 p.m. Proceeds are for the Ronald MacDonald House. There will be preserves, some baking and hand crafted jewelry for sale.

One of my granddaughters from Lethbridge, Alta., Brooke Calladine, will be competing in Airdrie, Alta. this weekend, representing her class for southern Alberta, at the Alberta Summer Games. Her parents will be going to help and watch the competitions.

Meota Golf Course is holding rib night on Aug. 1 at the Meota Hotel from 6-9 p.m.

It was nice to see Heather Armstrong's picture, on TV, as the winner of the scholarship put out by Access Communications Ltd. Heather grew up in Chitek Lake and everyone there knows and likes her, a girl with a great personality. She is the daughter of Ken and Gail Armstrong.

The contract bridge winners Monday evening were Mary Greenwald, high, and second was Joyce Luckey.

Visiting Beulah Corbiel this week are Corine and Mark Wasyliuk from Vernon, B.C.
