The Unity Composite High School journalism class had made headlines every year since inception, offering live streaming of various big events in Unity as well as outside of the community. This included the multi-media event at the International Ice Hockey Federation pre-tournament game held in Unity in December 2009 through to various volleyball provincials in Unity and outside of Unity.
Having the majority of this year's journalism class either playing in the home playoff Warrior football game or on the court at various volleyball tournaments in the province, Mrs. Cey was thrilled to have five Grade 12 students, all former journalism students, step up and volunteer to live-stream this home playoff game for all of those who could not attend in person.
Never a small undertaking, the enthusiasm and expert guidance of Living Sky School Division technology wizard, Ryan Kobelsky, aids the students in running a semi-pro media event.
Cameras were mounted on tripods in the back of two trucks manned by Amador Pervati and Andrew Risling, while a media station was set up in the back seat, leaving barely enough room to house the two operators, Jaron Ward and Dylan Ganter. Shevan Feser made her way back and forth on the sidelines, filming clips to send to the command centre for replays and cuts to use. All the while, UCHS journalism instructor, Mrs. Ruth Cey, supervised the operation along with Kobelsky.
It was not a warm day, or a calm one, but these volunteer Grade 12 journalism alumni didn't let that deter them from offering the best of their skills to ensure the production they were producing was nothing less than stellar, as that is the reputation UCHS journalism projects hold.
As always, the setup appears similar to multi-media productions seen at a variety of provincial and national sporting events. The only difference is the operators are still high school students and there is no pay involved, but the effort and energy combines to make for successful execution of the project at hand which is appreciated by all those who get to enjoy the results.
