The Neilburg senior girls' volleyball team is looking strong this year. The team travelled to Turtleford Sept. 8 and 9 to take part in St. Walburg's home tournament. The girls went through the round robin without dropping a set and got past Pierceland in a very entertaining semi-final. The girls then faced the St. Walburg Saints in the final. Early in the first set, starting setter Ashlee Goodfellow went down with an injury. The girls managed to fight through, winning the first set 25-15. In the second set, the loss of Ashlee was evident, as the girls fell 25-17. Ashlee pushed through the pain and played the last set where the girls regained their good play and won 25-19, winning the tournament. Congratulations, girls, and good luck at Maidstone Megavolley.
The team appreciates all the parents who drove, and the fans for coming out and cheering on the team. This year's team members are: Grade 10s Laura Hegel, Mikayla Watson, Danielle Scott, Ashley Ostrom, Kasey Schmidt and Kaibre Watson; Grade 11s Marissa Brockhoff, Ashlee Goodfellow, Avery Moir and Shannon Putnam; and Grade 12's Brenna Tyler and Dayneeka McCulloch.
Mr. Gieni reports the Grade 10 class had a field trip Sept 12 and 13. They went to Blue Mountain Outdoor Adventure Park where the group participated in many different activities. The students learned about teamwork when they co-operated on the challenge course, with the boys winning narrowly over the girls, in the different obstacles. From there, they faced their fears on the high ropes course, tackled wall climbing and flew above the trees on the zip line. Fun was had by all, even though the night's sleep was a little cold in the tents. Mrs. Carla Schmidt accompanied the group as a chaperone, and as the bus driver.
Neilburg Composite School is looking for old denim jeans with material that would be usable for a quilt or a wall hanging. You can drop off any unwanted jeans that may be suitable at the office.
Students and staff are happy that Tracy Goodfellow and her helpers will be starting to make hot lunches on Tuesdays, beginning in Oct.
The NCS 2010-2011 yearbook has arrived. These can be purchased at the school office for $25.
Unfortunately the photographer was ill, so school photographs were postponed.
A Minor Hockey work bee was held Sept. 21. Volunteers were asked to bring wall washers, rags, pails, screwdrivers and scrub brushes, so a lot of work could be accomplished.
Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Sylvia May Mawbey who passed away Sept 12 at the age of 58. A celebration of her life was held Sept. 17 from the Neilburg Community Hall with Pastor Mel Letkeman officiating and Gary Graham giving the eulogy. Memorial donations can be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
