Winter arrives with a sudden blast

Nov. 3 - Our deepest sympathy to the Bater and Peters families of the local area and North Battleford, on the sudden recent passing of Arthur Bater. Arthur was born and raised on the Baljennie Penrose farm and attended Baljennie School.

Nov. 3 - Our deepest sympathy to the Bater and Peters families of the local area and North Battleford, on the sudden recent passing of Arthur Bater.

Arthur was born and raised on the Baljennie Penrose farm and attended Baljennie School. He moved away for a good number of years, but due to poor health he did return to the farm to spend his last few years. Arthur always had a good producing garden, and he had a love for his dogs and house cat. Arthur was 62 years old. Both his parents have passed away. Funeral service held at the Garden Chapel Battlefords Funeral Home in North Battleford. Burial was at the St. Bridget's Cemetery family plot in Baljennie at a later date. We will all miss seeing Arthur about.

The air is crisp, the days are getting shorter and Jack Frost has halted the garden and yard work. Why does time go so quickly. Our Christmas catalogue is already here and I have not even got into making a list, yet. Let's try to slow time down and enjoy some comfort cooking for the family. Wake up one morning in late October to a very light dusting skiff of snow, but it soon all melted, but it is ever so dry.

The frost stayed away until mid October in our area. Even before the frost most of the tree leaves had turned into lush fall colors. With the high winds they were soon all on the ground and the trees have been bare for some time. The lack of moisture has done an early job on getting ready for winter.

Recent snow put an end to fall field work. Bales are all hauled in and the feed corrals were cleaned and manure spread on the fields, waiting for winter.

It did happen suddenly. A massive rain and snow storm moved in from Alberta to blanket the open prairies. Falling snow and blowing winds did shut some highways and left other roads very heavy with snow and icy beneath due to the rain. This is our first snowstorm of the 2013 season. I am sure winter has arrived.
