MELFORT — The City of Melfort will be trying to get government funding to fix the city’s water loss problem.
This year the city has had 45 water line breaks, losing the city 23 per cent of its water.
“Water loss is up in the range of 23 per cent, which is huge,” said Rick Lang, Melfort’s mayor. “For almost every four gallons that goes through the system almost one goes down the sewer.”
The cost for the lost water is $200,000 annually.
“That is a lot of water,” said Lang. “Volumes I don’t know how much that is, but hundreds of thousands of gallons, for sure.”
The City of Melfort will be seeking federal and provincial infrastructure funding to fix the problem.
“We’re looking at that federal and provincial infrastructure fund to see if we can get some help out of that because there is allocated money for those kinds of things and we just need to present a case that shows we are in dire need there of some funding,” Lang said. “And our case would rank up near the top of the file so to speak. So we’ll be going after some infrastructure funding for that if we can possibly get it.”
