Redberry Wildlife Federation held its annual horn measuring at the Blaine Lake Memorial Hall Dec. 22.

Boone and Crockett scorer for the Henry Kelsey Association, David Pezderic of Asquith was one of the certified scorers for the evening. He has been scoring for a number of years and enjoys working with the variety of antlers. Mark Buller of Waldheim is a branch level scorer and assisted Pezderic with the horn measuring.

Over 20 sets arrived to be scored including antelope, bear, moose, elk, typical and non-typical mule deer and typical and non-typical whitetail deer.

Highlights of submissions this year included some youth accomplishments such as moose antlers with a spread of 52 5/8, shot by Joseph Tanchak of Hafford. Riley Yasieniuk was fortunate to have entered a bear measuring 18 8/16 through archery. Riley was 14 at the time of the kill and indicated that this was his first time hunting bear with a bow.

"When I saw the bear approach I began to shake," says Riley, explaining how he had to regroup and refocus while hunting near Meadow Lake. One shot through the chest was enough to drop the estimated 300-pound black bear in only a few hundred yards.

"This is a serious accomplishment for a youth using archery for the first time," commented scorer Pezderic after measuring the skull.

Members of the Redberry Wildlife Federation will have an opportunity to enter their specimens for the club's awards. Presentation of angling and hunting awards is held annually in conjunction with a banquet in early spring.
