The City of North Battleford has raised the possibility of bringing in a possible anti-bullying bylaw.
The issue was brought up at Monday's council meeting by Councillor Trent Houk, in response to some calls from constituents about it.
They had seen a news item on TV about Hanna, Alta., where an anti-bullying bylaw has been enacted, said Houk.
Houk said he spoke with Hanna's mayor Wednesday and he said "there wasn't very much opposition and it seemed to be taken very well in the community."
That bylaw gives the RCMP power to fine for bullying, said Houk.
The bylaw was adopted in December 2012. In Hanna, fines for bullying start at $250 for first offences and go up to $1,000, or possible jail time if the fines are not paid.
"It certainly is an awareness issue," said Mayor Ian Hamilton.
Councillor Greg Lightfoot noted a copy of that bylaw was brought to a meeting they had the previous Tuesday night, a closed-door session where they had discussed public safety issues.
"I think it's something we may follow up on," said Lightfoot of the idea.
At the moment though, council is taking no action on the idea.
