The Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre will be out of commission for at least a month starting in mid-August.
In a news release from City Hall Monday, it was announced the aquatic centre will be closed Aug. 19 to Sept. 20.
The timing of the shutdown is in line with past years, Noted Parks and Recreation Director Keith Anderson. "It's a typical shutdown period," he said.
The closure will fall in that period after the summer registration programs conclude and prior to the start of fall registration programs.
Anderson pointed out that this time period was always chosen at the former Kinsmen Aquatic Centre to allow for clean up and repairs to maintain the facility.
"What we do is repair stuff that can't be repaired while the building's open," he said. Among that work is major cleaning of the facility, as well as equipment repairs and service work required on a yearly basis.
Because this is their warranty year, Anderson said the City is "telling the general contractor that if there's warranty work that you've got to do that requires the building to be empty, then this is your window of opportunity."
The shutdown period will provide an opportunity to address some ongoing issues with the HVAC and with the building envelope. "There are some mechanical issues that will be addressed at that time," said Anderson.
Because of the warranty work being done this year, the shutdown period will also be about a week longer than it normally was at the old Kinsmen Aquatic Centre.
Last year was a bit of an exception, as the August-September period marked the transition of staff from the old Kinsmen Aquatic Centre to the new Battlefords Co-op Aquatic Centre.
