Battlefords crime numbers still down for 2013

Battlefords City Detachment of the RCMP continue to report decreases in February compared to the same period in 2012.

Most major categories are down for the year so far, with only person offences and impaired driving offenses showing an increase in 2013. Calls for service are also down so far in 2013 to 1,913 compared to 2,242 for the first two months of 2012.

The numbers were provided to council Monday by Battlefords S/Sgt. Phil Wilson.

Through February, the RCMP reports break and enters to businesses are down 43 per cent, to residences down 31 per cent, property offences down 12 per cent, criminal code offences down 20 per cent, liquor act offences down 16 per cent and municipal bylaw offences down 28 per cent.

Also noted were declines in two areas that had seen some increases last year: drugs and provincial traffic offences. Drug offences were noted as down 44 per cent, from 94 to 53, while provincial traffic offences fell 63 per cent from 423 to 156.

Increases were noted in person offences - up eight per cent through February from 114 to 123 - and in impaired operation of a motor vehicle from 45 to 50. However, person offences did fall in February from 55 to 53 and impaired operation offences were up only slightly for the same month, from 25 to 27.

Motor vehicle collisions were up 43 per cent through February, from 42 to 60. There were 71 false alarms in February, bringing the number up to 148 for the year.
