Anticipation continues to build in North Battleford over the hosting of its own version of the Amazing Race July 1.
The event is part of the North Battleford Centennial celebrations that have been going on throughout 2013, and will coincide with Canada Day events as well.
Teams of four individuals each will take part in the elimination-based race, which will be modeled after the popular TV show.
As of this week a total of 12 teams have signed up to compete, and a couple more are said to be interested. The event will accept a maximum of 20 entries.
According to Amazing Race co-ordinator Shirley Maze, the teams already include some out of town entries from Saskatoon and also from Paradise Hill. Another team is comprised of individuals new to the community.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Battlefords Ag Society grounds on July 1, and continue across the city all day.
A long day is expected, said Maze, particularly for the final teams in the running at the end. It's expected the race likely won't conclude until close to 10 p.m.
"For the final three teams coming in, they're going to be tired," said Maze. "I would think just before fireworks the teams are going to come in, so it's a good way to end the day."
On Wednesday, an announcement was made in anticipation of that event, as Innovation Credit Union was introduced as the master sponsor for the Amazing Race.
Their sponsorship contribution is $7,500, which will help fund a $20,000 grand prize for the winning team. The other money to make up that prize comes from grants from the City.
There are also several other prizes to be offered as well by various local businesses, including ones that will be offered at each elimination leg of the race.
Maze says the event is "setting a milestone" for the city, and she encourages people to attend or take part. She also welcomes Innovation's participation as sponsor.
Maze called the Amazing Race "one of the biggest things I've put together. Without the assistance of Innovation Credit Union, Battlefords Agencies and North Battleford Agencies, this wouldn't be possible."
