Burgers, a back hoe and freaky tasting food were some of the highlights of the Maidstone School Community Council's Back to School Backyard Barbecue held last Wednesday.

It was the second year the committee organized the event and, even though the weather was chilly, there were crowds of people on hand to enjoy the meal, the company and the fun activities. The evening began with the introduction of the staff of both schools and an expression of gratitude to the school and community groups and businesses involved in the event showing their dedication and support to the young people of the community.

There were inflatable jumping toys, games with prizes, races, face painting, free books, a dinosaur dig and an opportunity to learn the delicate art of using the controls of a back hoe.

A free supper was offered as well as a chance to meet the teachers and tour the schools. An outdoor movie was planned but because of the weather it was moved into the gymnasium where SADD members sold drinks and snacks.

The community cares about the success and well-being of its young people and the barbecue was just a fun way to show it and to be rewarded with many smiles and thanks.
