Big Brothers Big Sisters getting ready for Diva Day

With the end of the school year, June is a wrap up time for Humboldt’s Big Brothers Big Sisters.

And they are wrapping up for the summer with a fun day of pampering at their Diva for a Day golf tournament on Jun. 4.

Community Development Coordinator, Stacey Poss, says they have a lot of fun stuff planned and a lot of individuals and businesses pitching in to help make the day.

“The event is going to be lots of fun,” says Poss. “Lots of food, laughter, great prizes, caddie auction, vendors on the holes, it’s going to be another great year.”

Poss says the caddie auction is going to be a high rolling part of the day with seven men going up on the block to be bought by 14 teams.

They’re going to go for a high price, says Poss.

With the caddie shortage, BBBS will be accepting new caddies right up to the last day with so many teams.

Thanks to Johnny’s Bistro, Co-op, Modern Meats, and Boston Pizza, ladies taking part in the day will get three meals included with their entry and pampering on the holes thanks to many other Humboldt businesses.

New to the sponsorship list this year is Sixth Avenue Stylists who are going all out, says Poss.

Along with sponsoring supper, Boston Pizza will also be sponsoring hole 10, says Poss. Anyone who hits the green will receive a Boston Pizza gift card.

Foot rubs, kick boxing,  and other pampering will make for a fun day for all the Humboldt divas.

Many teams are returning from last years event but Poss says they do have a couple of new ones as well.

This is also a great time for recruitment, says Poss, since the event gets people on the fence and contemplating volunteering.

The summer months are slower for Big Brothers Big Sisters but have an influx of volunteers come September.

Big Brothers Big Sisters have many opportunities as in school mentors or a big with the organization.

Right now, Big Brothers Big Sisters have 10 matches, 4 sister matches, 5 brother matches, and 1 mixed match with a big sister and little brother, says Big Brothers Big Sisters caseworker, Amy Hogemann.

Their waitlist has been recently updated as well, says Hogemann, with 6 little brothers and 3 little sisters on the list.

Two of the little brothers are from Lanigan so Hogemann says they are looking for big brothers from that area or who are willing to travel to Lanigan.

In total, 2015 saw 53 kids served by big matches, in-school mentoring, and school programs. By the end of March 2016, Big Brothers Big Sisters served another 20 kids.

Hogemann says that is par for the Humboldt organizations.

The numbers for the rest of 2016 are looking higher than par with the addition of the Go Girl program in Lake Lenore, which focuses on women’s health for grades 5 and 6, including peer pressure, nutrition, and exercise.
