The body of a missing man was found near Bruno

A grisly discovery was made near Bruno over the long weekend. The body of a man from Dana who went missing last fall was found in a slough.
On Sunday, July 3, at approximately 11:37 a.m., employees of CN Rail notified Humboldt RCMP that they had discovered the body of a person lying face down in a slough, just off of a grid road near the railroad tracks on the southwest end of Bruno.
RCMP members from Humboldt, the Saskatoon Major Crime Unit, along with RCMP Yorkton and RCMP Saskatoon Forensic Identification Section attended the scene to assist with this investigation.
From its condition, it was believed the body had been there for quite some time.
The body was later identified as that of Victor Mateyshin, 84, of Dana.
Along with Mateyshin's remains, the vehicle he was driving when he went missing last September, a white 2005 Crown Victoria, was also recovered. The vehicle, which was fully submerged, was located following a search by members of the RCMP Underwater Recovery Team. It was found approximately 100 metres from Mateyshin's body.
Foul play is not suspected in Mateyshin's death.
An autopsy is scheduled for this week in Saskatoon.
The provincial coroner's office is also involved in the investigation.
Mateyshin was first reported missing on September 22. He was last seen September 16 between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. approximately 10 miles north of Dana. He was alone and operating his vehicle. Mateyshin was reported to be in good health with no known illnesses, though he walked with a distinct limp, and his disappearance was noted as something extremely out of character for him.
At the time of his disappearance, family, friends and police across the province actively searched for him. RCMP Air Services conducted aerial searches of the area, as did a local pilot who knew Mateyshin. Rural landowners from Wakaw to Humboldt, especially those in the Dana and Bruno areas, were asked to search their properties.
A report of a possible sighting of Mateyshin on September 18 at a Wal-Mart in Prince Albert was made last fall, but did not aid in the search.
There was no sign of Mateyshin until last weekend.
